Mexico’s Fabian finalist for FIFA goal of the year

ZURICH — Mexico international Marco Fabian was named Wednesday one of 10 finalists for the FIFA Puskás Award for the best goal of the year.

The 25-year-old attacker scored his goal while playing for Cruz Azul in a 1-0 win over Puebla in a Liga MX match on February 15. He launched a shot from just outside the top right of the penalty area that settled into the top left corner of the net.

A member of El Tri’s gold-medal winning side at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Fabian also performed at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Two Major League Soccer players also were finalists.

New York Red Bulls midfielder-forward Tim Cahill scored his goal for Australia during the FIFA World Cup, while Camilo Sanvezzo tallied for the Vancouver Whitecaps against the Portland Timbers.

Users of FIFA.com and francefootball.fr will be able to choose from the finalists until Dec. 1, when the three goals with the most votes will be disclosed. Immediately after the announcement. Fans will be able to vote again for their favorite from the three remaining goals.

The winner will be revealed at the FIFA Ballon d’Or Jan. 12.

The award, created in honor and in memory of Ferenc Puskás, the captain and star of the Hungarian national team during the 1950s.
