Boat fire in East End, 33 arrests over weekend, rape, robbery & motor collision

Boat Fire

Officers from RCIPS are investigating the circumstances surrounding an explosions and fire to a boat docked on Hurlstone Street, Bodden Town. Approximately 10:38pm Monday 10th November 2014 residents reported hearing an explosion and on checking discovered a boat on fire. Detectives from BT – CID and Cayman Islands Fire Department are investigating this incident. The vessel was totally destroyed .

Original story: CITN/Cayman27 are reporting with dramatic photos of a boat explosion at East End on Monday night around 10:30pm. They said fire crews fought a huge blaze but the boat was completely destroyed.

There were two explosions reported by the television station and a nearby home had their window cracked from the loud noise.

No one was hurt but we understand the boat belonged to the brother of East End MLA Arden McLean.

Burglary Arrest

On Friday 7th November 2014 around 2.30pm, a homeowner returned to his property at Batabano Road, West Bay and discovered his door insecure and the premises subject of a burglary. The homeowner apprehended a male suspect who was in nearby bushes and a scuffle ensued, the suspect broke free. On Police arrival, a search was made and a 39 year old male resident from West Bay was arrested nearby.

The accused was taken to the George Town Hospital and treated for injuries received, he was later detained at Georgetown Police Station. The male homeowner sustained minor injuries that did not require hospital treatment.

The accused has since been charged with burglary and common assault and will appear in court later today

Rape

In the early hours of Friday 7th November 2014, Police were called to a report of rape at the Holiday Inn, Safehaven. A 23 year old female resident reported that she had been raped at knifepoint.

A 38 year old male from the district of George Town was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with rape and possession of a prohibited weapon, he will appear in court later today. The male and female were known to each other.

Robbery

At 10:50 pm Monday 10th November 2014, Police from the George Town Police Station received a report of a robbery at Paradise Restaurant, South Church Street. A lone male armed with a hand gun entered the restaurant and demanded money from the cash register. Money was also taken from two customers within the restaurant together with a cell phone.

At 1:52am Tuesday 11th November 2014, a female resident from George Town walking along the West Bay Road near Seven Mile Shops was approached by a male who grabbed her handbag and ran off. Minor injuries were received to the complainant who resisted. No weapon was reportedly used.

Arrest

Between Friday night and early Tuesday morning (long holiday weekend) thirty two persons were arrested throughout the Island of Grand Cayman for various offences. Of those, nine persons were arrested for DUI which was the leading cause for arrest.

Motor Collisions

Between 5:05am and 10:59am Tuesday 11th November 2014, officers from RCIPs attended six motor collisions in George Town, fortunately no serious injuries were received. Motorist are however advised during inclement weather to increase the distance with the vehicles ahead to at least 2 car lengths.
