iNews-briefs217Cayman Islands gymnast Lloyd makes history at Youth Olympics

From xinhuanet news

NANJING, China, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) — As the first gymnast from Cayman Islands to compete internationally, Morgan Lloyd is making history for her NOC, one flip at a time.

“It’s really cool and inspiring to the other gymnasts below me,” said Lloyd of her participation in the women’s artistic gymnastics qualifications at the Nanjing Youth Olympics on Monday.

Lloyd earned her berth to the Games through her performance at the 2014 junior Pan American championships in Aracaju, Brazil, in March. There, she also set a national and personal record of 39.334 points.

The 15-year old improved that record on Monday by scoring 41.250 points.

Whereas many international-level gymnasts train more than 30 hours per week, Lloyd estimates she is in the gym “20-something” hours per week.

Adriana Forde, who coaches Lloyd, said Lloyd’s performance at Nanjing 2014 is a success in its own right.

“It’s a huge challenge to come out here and hit four good routines,” Forde said. “For Morgan to get another personal best every time she’s on the international floor is a really big deal. We’re so proud she can come out here and smile and enjoy herself, and do her routines to a level she is happy with.”

Lloyd said she was pleased that her mental preparation produced satisfactory performances in Nanjing.

“I visualized four good routines,” she said. “I need to work on my bars, but I was happy about the rest of them.”

The gaming industry is booming and Sony’s lead is growing

By Timothy J. Seppala From engadget

Earlier this week Sony announced that it’d sold over 10 million PlayStation 4s to date, but that isn’t the half of it: the company’s latest gaming console is once again dominating the sales charts overall. As Sony tells it, July marks the seventh consecutive month that the PS4 outsold Microsoft’s Xbox One. Hardware isn’t the only area Sony is trumping its rival either, as The Last of Us: Remastered led software sales last month by a “considerable” margin ahead of number-two-seller Minecraft on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The gaming sector as a whole is incredibly healthy, too. The NPD Group reports that even though software sales are down overall for July (something it attributes directly to the lack of an NCAA Football release this year), hardware is picking up the slack. Comparing life-to-date numbers of the PS4 and Xbox One to their predecessors, the new consoles are outselling the PS3 and Xbox 360 by almost a whopping 80 percent. That puts this July ahead of last by 13 percent in terms of total money spent in the area, according to NPD.

Nintendo seems to be doing pretty well, too, despite that massive $97 million loss. The outfit says that Mario Kart 8 has now sold over a million copies in the US alone, and the Wii U has increased year-to-date sales by 60 percent compared to 2013.

What about Microsoft? Well, Redmond’s lack of a formal announcement should speak for itself. When we reached out for a comment, a company spokesperson reminded us that the Xbox One sales numbers more-than doubled in June (still no word on what they doubled from) and that “this momentum” continued into July. And, well, that’s about it. When you look at how many Xbox One software-bundled systems that Microsoft is releasing this fall, just how far behind the company is to its main competition (Sony) should be pretty apparent — the firm’s desperate and essentially giving away some of its biggest games in the hopes that people will buy an Xbox One.

Guyana seeks US help following discovery of narcotics submarine

From Caribbean360

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Guyana government says it will do whatever is required to deal with the illegal drugs trade here after the authorities discovered a submersible vessel allegedly being used by drug smugglers in the North West region of the country.

“We will spend whatever is necessary; I can’t say that we will spent unlimited amounts. We have limited resources, and we have competing areas that we want to put our money into. Already we are spending quite a bit on security and we will continue to spend money to fight against crimes and criminal elements, if there is need to spend more money in the fight against drugs, of course we will do that,” President Donald Ramotar told reporters as he responded to the discovery of the vessel.

Ramotar said that there was need for international cooperation to deal with the illegal smuggling of drugs, adding that the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) had been contacted and would be working with their local counterparts in the investigations.

“What we have done at the moment is that we have secured the place and we are going to move in with our own experts and the DEA people to examine so that we can have a better picture of what has taken place, what is there and have much more information on this matter in the not too distant future,” he said.

No one has been detained in connection with the discovery of the 65-feet long and 12-feet wide fiberglass vessel that was found by law enforcement officials including members of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU).

President Ramotar praised CANU and the other security services for the discovery of the vessel that is believed to have been constructed locally.

This wedding band washed up at a Caribbean hotel. Now the search is on.

weFrom Caribbean Journal

A gold wedding band recently washed up on the shore of the Cap Maison hotel in St Lucia recently.

The inscription on the ring simply read, “I Love You Nancy.”

It was discovered when a staff member spotted something glimmering in the water below the hotel’s rock Maison private dock, below the hotel’s Cliff at Cap restaurant.

Now, the hotel is trying to find the owner.

“The ring has special meaning to someone and we are committed to solving the mystery and returning it to its rightful owner,” said Ross Stevenson, general manager of Cap Maison. ”

The hotel said it was using the hashtag “ILoveYouNancy” in its bid to help find the ring and “restore the profound love that it symbolizes.”
