Zumba, games and grub conclude Cayman Islands Child Month

To wrap up Child Month celebrations, families came out to enjoy a fitness workout last week Wednesday (30 May) followed by an action-packed games and trivia competition on Thursday (31 May).

Organised by Anytime Fitness, the two-hour Zumba session kept participants in high gear as they moved to the beats of Soca, Reggaeton, Salsa and more. Attendees helped set the tone by dressing in bright neon colours.

In line with this year’s theme: Educate, Motivate and Advocate for All Children, activities continued with a Board Games & Trivia Night at Book Nook organised by the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). Twenty-two teams of parents and kids participated in the friendly competitions. Picture puzzles, card games, fishing and sandwich stacking all engaged bright minds.

Commenting on the active month, the Minister responsible for Community Affairs, the Hon. Mike Adam, MBE, JP said, “Congratulations to the DCFS staff for organizing so many successful events that encouraged us to celebrate God’s great gifts. These activities reminded us of the important role adults play in children’s innocent lives.”

He added, “It was a great honour to be a part of festivities which inspired us to spend more time with our children.”

Sharing similar comments, DCFS Director, Alicia ‘Jen’ Dixon thanked the many organizations, businesses and individuals who participated in the month-long activities, making them educational and enjoyable for families. “Our children are truly precious and need our love, support, and guidance all year round as they blossom into their true potential,” she said

DCFS Child Month Coordinator Cassandra Parchment commented that it was overwhelming to witness such great public participation this year.

Expressing the hope that the theme of the celebration would continue to make an impact through the remainder of 2012, she added, “Although Child Month is observed in May each year, I urge you to celebrate the children of these islands every month of every year – for they are our future leaders.”
