Urban Sketchers features Grand Cayman

rum+pointThe Urban Sketchers website (www.urbansketchers.org), a grassroots 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering the art of on-location drawing, has a lovely story posted on their website about the Blue Iguana and the sculpture at Rum Point. Enjoy:

Holiday on Rum Point, Grand Cayman

Having a daughter living and working on Grand Cayman has afforded us reason to make an occasional holiday visit.

One of her favorite spots (and mine too) is Rum Point, a remote spot only accessible by boat or an hour-long auto trip around the circumference of the island.

This sketch shows the “welcome dock” for arriving boats, as well as an iguana sculpture that is one of 15 throughout the island.  They were commissioned to highlight the endangered Blue Iguana.  This one was painted by local artist Nasaria Suckoo Chollette, and I have not done justice to her fine work…but you must visit and see for yourself.

While there, I recommend the Cubano sandwich and the Rum Point Sunset:

1 part each of Coconut Rum and Overproof Rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, a touch of Grenadine, and top off with dark rum.
