Wednesday, June 4 – At a ceremony at the Governor’s Office on Monday (2 June), Governor Boyd McCleary presented the Commissioner of Police David Morris with 250 Trauma Kits supplied by funding from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office Overseas Territories Programme Fund (OTPF).

At the ceremony, the Governor explained that the idea to provide the packs was developed following a powerful presentation to the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police (ACCP) by the St. Croix Chief of Police where he described how he had used a trauma pack to save his life and that of a fellow police officer. The ACCP has committed to supplying the packs to its member forces, with the UK Overseas Territories being supplied by the UK FCO team in Miami.

The Commissioner of Police explained that the Trauma Packs also called Patrol Pocket Packs will form part of the Officer Safety and Protection Programme that is in place to equip officers in the RVIPF with essential equipment to protect and safeguard their lives and those of the public.

Two-thirds of all preventable police deaths are due to severe bleeding caused by penetrating trauma injuries such as arterial gunshot wounds. As response times of emergency medical care can vary, the ability to reach wounded officers within moments of injury, especially penetrating trauma injuries can mean the difference between life and death.

The Trauma Packs contain critical lifesaving bandaging that can be applied by a trained officer to themselves or another officer or a member of the public when there is a penetrating trauma injury with severe bleeding. In partnership with the BVI Health Authority, training will begin very soon for officers on how to use these packs.
