Three CNN journalists resign after retracted story

Republican presidential candidate former House Speaker Newt Gingrich reacts to a question at the start of the Republican presidential candidate debate at the North Charleston Coliseum in Charleston, S.C., Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012. Gingrich is denying that he ever asked his ex-wife for an open marriage and angrily denounced CNN’s John King, moderator of Thursday night’s Republican debate for raising the issue. Three veteran journalists in a new CNN investigative unit – including a Pulitzer Prize winner – have resigned in the wake of a retraction of their report on a Russian investment fund’s supposed link to an aide to President Donald Trump.

CNN Money reported the departing journalists are Thomas Frank – who wrote the story that cited a single anonymous source – Eric Lichtblau, an editor in the new CNN investigative unit; and Lex Haris, who oversaw the unit.

“In the aftermath of the retraction of a story published on CNN.com, CNN has accepted the resignations of the employees involved in the story’s publication,” a spokesman told CNN Money.

CNN management determined some standard editorial processes were not followed when the article was posted online; it was never broadcast on CNN, CNN Money reported.

In its retraction, CNN included an apology to Trump aide Anthony Scaramucci.

Frank worked for USA Today and Newsday for three decades, pursuing investigations and covering the Iraq war as an embedded reporter, before coming to work at CNN.

Lichtblau was a veteran of The New York Times who won a Pulitzer Prize for national reporting in 2006.

Haris, who was named the executive editor of CNN Investigates unit in January, was previously the executive editor of CNNMoney.
