The Editor Speaks: What leaks like a tap?

Colin WilsonwebThe answer is government emails and reports

We have had government emails and reports leaking everywhere. Most seem to have leaked a long way from the source, George Town and turned up the other end of the island – some in a truck in North Side whilst others have appeared in East End. The most recent leak has been even further away – in Cayman Brac!

Are these leaks the work of whistleblowers?

It depends on what your definition of a whistleblower is.

Even the President of the USA has difficulty with defining that one.

Recently we had a “secret” independent first report on our public schools that even the government didn’t know about but East End MLA Arden McLean had a copy.

Who gave it to him?

Mum did.

Now we have leaked emails that have mischievously appeared in the pocket of Cayman Brac hotelier, Cleveland Dilbert, between deputy director of the Department of Environment, Tim Austin and Turtle Nest volunteer and Brac environmentalist Bonnie Scott.

The emails certainly would appear to show a bias against Cleveland Dilbert’s Marina project by Austin and has certainly inflamed a situation that was already more than a smouldering bonfire.

If I was Dilbert I would not be a happy camper with or without something to keep me warm.

He feels he is being victimized by the present government and he would most certainly have preferred the previous Bush led UDP one. He most likely would have got planning approval by now.

The emails would appear to be about the proximity of turtle nests to the proposed Dilbert marina and even though Scott said in an email to Austin she had the data, and had been asked to provide it to Cleveland’s brother, Tim. She said she was reluctant to do it because she hated “co-operating with him FOR the marina.”

Austin, in the exchange of emails asked her if she was aware of turtle nests in the beach vicinity of Salt Water Pond that is adjacent to the Dilbert hotel and the subject of their proposed marina. He then added the words, “I hope so”.
Even before these emails Austin had signed a DoE document stating “the works [marina] will require the removal of active turtle nesting beach.”

That certainly smacks of bias against the project something the DoE should NOT be engaged in.

If the DoE can write a report saying there are active turtle nests on a site when there are not, it undermines any thing else they say.

It is no use now saying the turtle nesting was not a large part of the report. What it does say is that every thing the DoE says is questionable.

It is most unfortunate.

Perhaps I should call a plumber then the leaks would be fixed and none of us would be any the wiser.

But is that a good thing?
