The Editor speaks: Stay put

Colin Wilsonweb2I am dismayed that Bodden Town MLA Alva Suckoo has followed Anthony Eden in resigning from the Progressives – the party that took him under their wings and promoted him to become a Member of the Legislative Assembly.

I doubt very much if he had campaigned as an Independent he would be sitting where he is now.

Anthony Eden is different. He has a pedigree, a good one, and if he had stood in the last election alone I am convinced he would still have been elected.

Suckoo has betrayed his party and even more the people that voted him in as their Progressives’ representative.

I understand his position on same sex marriage but the Premier, Alden McLaughlin had his hands tied.

The Cayman Islands is not an independent country and has to report to The Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London. They pull the strings when it counts and they too are part of a wider organization. Then there is the Human Rights issue and McLaughlin made his reasoning with that in mind.

Whilst I agree 100% with Suckoo’s views that this country’s Christian foundations are “under attack” it still does not justify his resignation.

If he is so “pure” and adamant about resigning he should have also resigned as an MLA and allowed a by-election to take place.

He has done a lot of damage to his once leader’s reputation and McLaughlin demanded his 100% backing whether you agree or not. Under a party system it is votes that count and you have to go along with the majority. If you were elected under the party banner you have no option but to stay put. You can’t say thanks for canvassing for me and using your name to fly under but now you have helped me get where I am – goodbye.

If Suckoo’s high and mighty principals cannot allow him to go along with the majority system he must resign as an MLA as well.

You should not have both.

You have let your people down Suckoo and I am very dismayed. You should have made your point publically you do not agree but waited for the next election that is not a long time away and then resigned from the Progressives.

Sorry. You should have stayed put. You then might have got my vote. You won’t now.
