The Editor Speaks: Same sex marriages – Law v Bible

Colin Wilsonweb2The Cayman Islands Ministers’ Association at a prayer meeting in honour of Cayman Thanksgiving on Monday 6 December held at the George Town Hall urged the Cayman Islands to resist “yielding to the impulse” of recognising same-sex marriages. I would have used the word “temptation”.

It is not natural for same sex unions no matter how much of a spin you put on it.

The attraction of being with someone of the same sex can be likened to a disease especially when the person in a male body feels he is a female and vice-versa. It must be a horrifying predicament and sadly persons have committed suicide over it.

I have many friends in the “gay” community and I respect their right to form a partnership with someone of the same sex as they are.

I fully understand their love for their partner and I abhorred the language MLA Anthony Eden used to describe same sex unions. I, however, respect his right to leave the political party he helped to found because Premier Hon Alden McLaughlin revealed that government is considering adjusting the immigration law to allow for same sex partners to be accepted as dependents.

To be fair to the Premier he doesn’t have a choice but to obey the Law of the United Kingdom/Human Rights or resign as Leader of Government and to uphold the Law as it relates to the Bible.

Jesus Christ’s teachings have been the inspiration for many of the founding principles the Cayman Islands were built upon.

The Minister’s Association said the recognition of same-sex marriage would lock into place the false and destructive belief that marriage is all about romance and other adult satisfactions. Marriage, they said is “for the generation, promotion and protection of life.” They want to “preserve the legal definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman and to rebuild the marriage culture of our society. Moreover, we affirm that no one should be compelled to embrace any religion against his will, nor should persons or communities of faith be forbidden, subject to a reasonable and sympathetic application of law, to worship God according to the dictates of conscience or to express freely and publicly their deeply held religions convictions.

“We deplore wherever it is found the use of anti-discrimination statues to force religious institutions, businesses and service providers of various sorts either to comply with activities they judge to be deeply immoral or to go out of business.

“We will not receive or promulgate any rule purporting to force our institutions to bless immoral sexual partnerships, or treat them as marriages or the equivalent, or refrain from proclaiming the truth, as they and we know it, about morality, marriage and the family.”

So we now have a conundrum.

The Cayman Islands is a UK Dependent Territory. It is not a country in its own right. It would be very simple for Premier McLaughlin to uphold everything the Minister Association’s Declaration says if we were Independent.

We are not.

As Jesus said, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

I cannot dispute that.

However, the Law and the Bible in today’s world is more complex as the Bible’s teachings become eroded everyday as most of its teachings are not now popular.

And this plays into the hands of the fundamentalists who preach words of hate against the corrupt society we have become and inflame the mad to become terrorists.

Nothing is simple. But who said it was?
