Sir Rodney commends support of ‘architectural gems’

From Antigua Observer

Governor General Sir Rodney Williams has commended all those who have made contributions towards the restoration of both the St John’s Anglican Cathedral and Government House, and he has called for additional support for the projects.

Referring to the two historical buildings as “two architectural gems”, Sir Rodney made the call during a commemorative reception for the 175th anniversary of the Anglican Diocese of the North Eastern Caribbean and Aruba, which he hosted jointly with Lady Williams at Government House.

‘Celebrating our Heritage, Seizing the Moment, Embracing the Future’ was the theme for the week of commemorative activities.

In a brief address, the Governor General outlined that the history of Government House is closely aligned with that of the St John’s Anglican Cathedral.

Sir Rodney also called on his guests to safeguard the integrity of creation, and to strive to sustain and renew the life of the earth.

Noting that the Cathedral had been reopened earlier in the day – Thursday 24 August –  Sir Rodney reminded the gathering that apart from sharing the same city, the two structures “celebrate a simultaneous anniversary and house the seat of authority for the State and the Anglican Diocese of the North Eastern Caribbean and Aruba respectively”.

In encouraging his guests to support the restoration of both properties which are considered national treasures, Sir Rodney commended all those who have made meaningful contributions to the projects to date.

Referring to the writings of the Diocesan Bishop, the Right Reverend Errol Brooks, who was among the guests along with other members of the clergy, the Governor General declared that the expected outcome or legacy of this year’s 175th commemorative anniversary should include responding to human need by loving service, transforming unjust structures in society, challenging violence of every kind and pursuing peace and reconciliation.
