Former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson missed the Reds’ victory over Swansea at the weekend after swapping rainy Old Trafford for the Caribbean.

While his successor David Moyes was ending the club’s losing streak with a 2-0 win, Fergie was enjoying a week-long holiday with family and friends in Barbados.

Moyes has endured a tough first half to the season under the watchful gaze of his predecessor, who has moved upstairs as a director.

Sir Alex is believed to be marking two landmark birthdays with his grandchildren and extended family.

He was photographed at the island’s Lone Star restaurant with former United stars Norman Whiteside and Bryan Robson, and the comedian Russ Abbot.

Sir Alex was also set to miss tonight’s 2014 Fifa Ballon d’Or awards in Switzerland, where he was nominated for coach of the year.

He lost out to former Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes.
