Desperate search for American woman, 28, who went missing while on a group snorkeling trip four days ago during Caribbean vacation with her husband

Amanda Waller, 28, and her husband Allan, were on a vacation to the island of Curacao when she disappeared on Thursday

The Katy, Texas couple were on a trip with about 20 others from the Houston area

Around 3pm, Amanda decided to swim back to shore to join a pregnant friend on the beach, while the others continued to snorkel

But when the rest of her friends returned to the beach 20 minutes later, Amanda was nowhere to be found

An American woman vacationing on the island of Curacao has been missing for four days, after disappearing without a trace during a snorkeling excursion.

By the time her husband Allan returned to the beach 20 minutes later, Amanda was nowhere to be seen.

It’s not known whether Amanda ever made it back to shore.

Amanda and her husband were on the trip to Curacao – an island off the coast of Venezuela – with a group of about 20 others from the Houston, Texas area.

‘It was a lot of us,’ S. Lee, who was on the trip, told KTRK. ‘And we all didn’t know each other. Some of us knew each other, and some of us didn’t.’

A pregnant woman, who was a friend of Amanda’s, got tired first and decided to go back to shore and Amanda said she would follow a few minutes later.

‘When Matt [Myers, another friend] got back from snorkeling, he said “where’s Amanda?” No one could find her,’ Terri Youngs said. ‘No one ever saw her come back ashore. The last person that saw 2A15ADA600000578-3143150-image-a-16_1435583260624her was Matt and he said she signaled that she was coming back to shore.’

After hearing that Amanda was no where to be found, the group started searching the waters, optimistic that she was nearby.

‘At first we thought something happened in the water, maybe she caught a leg cramp. She’s a strong swimmer, from what her husband says,’ Youngs said.

However, after about 30 minutes they decided to call in the coast guard and a search in the sea and air began.

Meanwhile, the group took to the land, going door to door to hand out missing persons flyers.

Amanda’s sister-in-law told KHOU on Sunday that the coast guard’s search efforts would cease after 72 hours, at which point the family would be responsible for search and rescue efforts.

Amanda’s husband and father continue to search for her in Curacao and the family has set up a GoFundMe account to offset some of the costs of continuing to stay on the island. Amanda is a University of Houston graduate who grew up in Baytown.
