The Cayman Islands today (Saturday, 11 June) celebrated the 90th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Senior government officials gathered with other dignitaries and members of the public to observe the ceremony, held in front of the Legislative Assembly building in George Town. The programme included the traditional parade by uniformed services, a royal salute, 21-gun salute and three cheers for Queen Elizabeth II.

Queen's Birthday Celebration (4)At the ceremony prominent accountant and civic leader Mr. Layman Queen's Birthday Celebration (2)Daniel “Dan” Scott received the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) medal.

Members of the public who attended the ceremony were gifted with a Queen’s Birthday 90th Birthday Commemorative Button. The button was designed by Government Information Service’s Graphic Designer Kara Coe especially for the celebrations.

Deputy Governor, Hon. Franz Manderson, announced the new Queen’s Birthday Honours recipients: Charles Wesley Watler to be named to the Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to the community in the Cayman Islands; Philip Agustus Rankin, the Certificate and Badge of Honour for services to the financial services industry in the Cayman Queen's Birthday Celebration (5)Queen's Birthday Celebration (7)Islands and to the board of Cayman Airways.

Parade contingents included the Royal Cayman Islands Police Band, and detachments from Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, the Cayman Islands Fire Service, HM Prison Service, the Veterans, Girls Brigade, Scouts and the Cadet Corps.

Following the ceremony attendees made their way to Government House for the annual Garden Party. Highlights of that event included a performance by members of Cayman Drama Society, taken from their new comedy production “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Queen's Birthday Celebration (6)Queen's Birthday Celebration (8)(abridged)”, and a performance by the Cayman National Youth Choir.
