Jamaica: Prime Minister to review AG’s report on Petrojam

by Donique Weston From Proud Jamaica

A watershed moment for transparency and accountability in the country – this from Prime Minister Andrew Holness who is to review the Auditor General’s report on the operations of the state-owned oil refinery, Petrojam,

The report, titled ‘A review of aspects of Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) and a comprehensive audit of Petrojam Limited’, was tabled in parliament yesterday (December 4).

It highlighted high levels of oil losses, inconsistent recruitment and employment practices, explicit nepotism and a weakening financial position.

Mr. Holness who returned to the island today (December 5) says the government has to look at how public resources are used adding that further action will be taken after the review.

Meanwhile, Information Minister Ruel Reid who responded to questions on the report at today’s Post Cabinet Press Briefing said the government has been very proactive in addressing some of the systemic issues inherited.

He refuted suggestions that the government is being tight lipped on the issue.

Mr. Reid noted that the government believes in strong, bold and transformational leadership, and assured the public that this matter would be dealt with properly and to the satisfaction of all concerned.
