Our clinical volunteers are trained to provide assistance and support in many ways, from companionship to transportation and running errands. Their roles are guided by a patient’s needs. They are recruited, screened/ trained and are obligated to maintain privacy/ confidentiality and to respect patients/ family members choices.

Care is taken to match patients with volunteers who have similar interest, or speak the same language, have similar personalities live nearby or are otherwise deemed a good fit.

Tulane awarded $3 million to study impact of pollutants in Caribbean countries

The National Institutes of Health awarded a $3 million grant to Tulane University and the Academic Hospital Paramaribo in the Caribbean nation of Suriname to establish a center to study how neurotoxins from mining and agricultural development are affecting pregnant women and child health throughout the Caribbean.

Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and Suriname’s largest hospital will establish the Caribbean Consortium for Research in Environmental Health and Occupational Health to recruit 1,000 pregnant women whose diet might expose them to mercury, lead, arsenic and several pesticides, says Dr. Maureen Lichtveld, who holds the Freeport McMoRan Chair of Environmental Policy at Tulane.

“In many developing countries such as Suriname, pregnant women depend on fish and produce locally caught or grown that are contaminated as a result of unsafe mining and farming practices,” says Lichtveld, principal investigator.

The center will follow the children born to mothers in the study from birth to age four to examine how chemical exposure affects their brain development. The goal is to provide government officials with sound data on the health impact of environmental pollutants on residents so officials can make better informed policy decisions.

“Suriname does not have any national environmental health policies in place and that is true for many other Caribbean countries,” Lichtveld says.

The findings will be disseminated throughout the Caribbean through the Caribbean Public Health Agency.

The grant is part of a $20.9 million effort announced this week by the NIH and other U.S. and Canadian partners to establish seven regional research and training centers in low- and middle-income countries to address environmental or occupational health issues. The centers will be based in India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Ethiopia, Peru, Ghana and Suriname.

“Our grant is the first NIH grant for a project in Suriname,” Lichtveld says.

October 15, 2015. Catalonia between the memory and the future

The 15th of October will be 75 years that the fascist regime of General Franco murdered (in the castle of Montjuic) the president of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Lluís Companys, unique in the history of Europe that a legally elected president It is shot to defend democracy.

The same day, October 15, the current president of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Artur Mas, will be submitted to the Spanish court of justice accused, along with two counselors of his government, by the fact of setting up the polls on November 9 2014 to allow the citizens of Catalonia vote on their future at the refusal of the Spanish government.

This legal situation has been promoted by the government of the Popular Party led by Mariano Rajoy in a serious action that calls into question the separation of powers in the Spanish state. We must also remember that the Popular Party was founded by Manuel Fraga Iribarne, Minister of General Franco, and has never condemned the assassination of President Lluís Companys.

Another important fact to note is that in the last elections to the Catalan Parliament, on 27 September, the independence forces (Together for Yes and CUP) obtained an absolute majority with 72 deputies, thus initiating the process will definitely carry Catalonia to independence and to be one among the free nations of the world.

The next day, October 15, the Catalan people will honor the martyr President Lluís Companys, it will give its full support to President Artur Mas and show the world their full willingness and confidence in a future of freedom.

She’s not much to look at; slender, certainly well rounded–Alexa is always dressed in black. She’s not tall, shy to a fault, and never intrudes in your life unless you call on her–which I often do. If I need to remember something, I’ll ask her to remind me. On Saturday’s I love the afternoon nap. “Alexa, wake me up in 20 minutes.” And she does. “Alexa, play jazz 24.” And she does. “Alexa, play Joni Mitchell.” And she does. “Alexa, what’s the weather going to be like in Chicago tomorrow?” And she tells me before I travel. “Alexa, how many tablespoons in a cup?” and I know. “Alexa, play wait wait don’t tell me.” And I laugh. “Alexa, how far away is Saturn?” And my grandkids are impressed–though 3 year-old Henry still has trouble getting her attention.

When I first brought Alexa into my home I figured she’d be just another Siri, or Google, but I was wrong. Alexa has the most amazingly natural speech pattern I have ever heard; a college grad next to bumbling machines. She’s smart–tells jokes too–and is always there for me. If I need a recipe, I just ask. If I want to know the headlines, I just ask. She’s a bit sassy at times–but I would expect nothing less. And Alexa is now part of my family.

Tethys Petroleum Limited Press Release: Tajikistan Update

GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN ISLANDS, Oct 12, 2015 (Marketwired via COMTEX) — Tethys Petroleum Limited (“Tethys” or the “Company”) (TPL)(TPL) announces that on October 11, 2015, it received a notice to withdraw from the Joint Operating Agreement and Shareholders Agreement dated June 18, 2013 relating to the Bokhtar PSC in Tajikistan (the “JOA”) and the underlying PSC (the “Contract”) from CNPC Central Asia B.V. (“CNPC”) and Total E&P Tajikistan B.V. (“Total”).

The notice of withdrawal was served on the basis that Tethys has not made the payment on October 9, 2015 for the September Cash Call (approximately US$1.28 Million) issued by the Bokhtar Operating Company. Tethys has also not made payment for the October 2015 Cash Call (approximately US$0.78 million). Pursuant to the notice of withdrawal, Total and CNPC state that they jointly require Tethys’ subsidiary, Kulob Petroleum Limited to completely withdraw from the JOA and assign all of its participating interests derived from the Contract and the JOA to Total and CNPC in proportion to their respective participating interests.

Tethys is considering its position under the JOA, the Contract and under applicable laws and equity and, as stated in its announcement on October 9, 2015, Tethys will use all commercially reasonable efforts to protect its interest in the Bokhtar PSC in Tajikistan.

Minorities speak out in Latin American population conference

MEXICO CITY, Oct 10 2015 (IPS) – “The countries of Latin America have not fully committed themselves to the international conventions and have not given indigenous peoples access. Nor have their contents been widely disseminated,” to help people demand compliance and enforcement, said Guatemalan activist Ángela Suc.

The indigenous community organiser’s criticism is an alert regarding the pledges made at the Second Session of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, organised Oct. 6-9 in Mexico City by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the United Nations population fund (UNFPA).

“We need land, territory, and access to culturally sensitive healthcare and education in line with our traditions and knowledge and in our languages,” Suc told IPS.

Suc, a representative of the Pocomchí people in the Guatemalan delegation to the conference, said the native population also experiences demographic phenomena such as migration and ageing, just like the non-indigenous population in the region.

The vicissitudes of native and black populations were part of the focus of the debates at the conference, which followed the one held in Montevideo in August 2013. A civil society gathering was also organised parallel to the official conference.

Participants discussed the problems still affecting these groups, such as poverty, discrimination, lack of opportunities, and high maternal and infant mortality rates.

More than 45 million indigenous people live in this region of around 600 million. They belong to over 800 native groups, according to the ECLAC report “Indigenous peoples in Latin America: progress in the last decade and pending challenges for guaranteeing their rights.”

Brazil heads the list, with 305 different native groups, followed by Colombia (102), Peru (85) and Mexico (78). At the other extreme are Costa Rica and Panama (nine), El Salvador (three) and Uruguay (two).

The countries with the largest numbers of indigenous people are: Mexico (nearly 17 million), followed by Peru (7.2 million), Bolivia (6.2 million), and Guatemala (5.9 million).

ECLAC reports the fragile demographics of many native peoples, who are at risk of actually disappearing, physically or culturally, as observed in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Peru.

The problems they face include forced displacement from their land, scarcity of food, pollution of their water sources, soil degradation, malnutrition and high mortality rates.

Birth rates are dropping in the region, with an average of 2.4 children per indigenous women in Uruguay, 4.0 in Nicaragua and Venezuela, and 5.0 in Guatemala and Panama.

Barbadian and other regional hoteliers and tourism officials are being urged to become more educated about the benefits of shared ownership (time share) to the success of their properties.

Neil Kolton, director, sales and marketing of Interval International, which offers vacation ownership exchange, travel and leisure services, stressed that he was disappointed more Caribbean hoteliers and tourism officials from the region were not in attendance at last week’s 17th Annual Shared Ownership Investment Conference in Miami, to meet developers, “many of whom are interested in investing in shared ownership developments in the region”.

Pointing out that “the Caribbean remains the number one destination of choice by prospective shared ownership buyers in the United States”, Kolton stressed that countries such as Barbados, Antigua, Grenada and other regional islands stood to profit substantially from shared ownership.

He said steady representation at the annual conference would prove helpful, particularly to those properties which experience low occupancies outside of the winter season.

“Having a vibrant shared vacation ownership programme will benefit the islands significantly. Surveys have shown that expenditure by persons who purchase shared ownership spend significantly more money on various tourism products and services.”

Kolton added that major hotel brands such as Marriott, Hyatt and Starwood continued to reap multi-million dollars from operating mixed-used properties, that is, offering both traditional hotel and shared ownership vacations.

“The demand for shared ownership is such that homeowners realise the product is good,” Kolton said.

He further stressed that properties in Aruba and St Maarten, the countreis with the highest shared ownership properties in the Caribbean, were undergoing multi-million dollar renovations and investing in new shared ownership developments, because they recognised the significance of shared ownership to their bottom line.

He said that while there remained a shortage of vacation ownership properties in many Caribbean islands, the demand for the Caribbean was such that “Inverval International has been working with owners of traditional hotels through rental programmes which enable shared ownership members to vacation at properties in Barbados and other parts of the region at preferential rates. Caribbean nationals among 314 criminals arrested in US

From Jamaica ObserverThe United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) says it has arrested several Caribbean nationals among 314 criminal immigrants in an enforcement action targeting individuals who pose a threat to public safety.

ICE said that its Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers made the arrests across the state of Florida.

The immigration agency said those arrested from the Caribbean included nationals from the Bahamas, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, St. Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis, Turks & Caicos Islands, Antigua and Cuba.

ICE said the arrests took place during an enforcement action, which concluded on September 29, and that they met atl east one of the agency’s three enforcement priorities.

Over one quarter had criminal records that included felony convictions for serious or violent offenses, such as murder, attempted murder, child sex crimes, sex offenses, weapons charges and drug violations, ICE said.

“As this operation makes clear, ICE is committed to prioritizing convicted criminals and those who are public safety threats for apprehension and removal,” said Marc J. Moore, field office director for the Miami Field Office of ERO, which oversees all of Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
