Citrix: Taking “Remote Access” to a New Level

The Citrix Corporation is a widely known provider of remote-access software, which allows employees to use “remote login” technogy to access a centrally located computer from their home offices. If the company’s corporate report is to be believed, it seems a substantial number of its 9,500 employees must be remotely logging in from homes in the Cayman Islands. How else to explain the fact that domestic sales accounted for 56 percent of its worldwide revenues last year but the company claimed none of its profits were earned in the United States? One clue to this mystery lies in the company’s income tax note, which states that the company’s $2.3 billion in permanently reinvested foreign earnings are “primarily held by its foreign subsidiary in the Cayman Islands.” $2.3 billion also happens to be the total amount of profit the company has reported outside the United States in the last 11 years, dubiously suggesting that the lion’s share of the company’s income-generating activities must be taking place in the Caymans.

UK and CDB launch the United Kingdom Caribbean Infrastructure (UKCIF) Programme
Eight Caribbean countries and one British Overseas Territory are closer to accessing funding to build new roads, bridges, ports and other vital infrastructure as the United Kingdom’s Caribbean Infrastructure (UKCIF) Programme becomes operational. The UKCIF was ratified on March 9th by the Board of the Caribbean Development Bank, paving the way for implementation of the game changing programme. The Department for International Development will provide up to £300m in grant financing from January 2016 to March 2020 to Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and The Grenadines and Montserrat.

Teen pregnancy in the Caribbean

The United Nations is calling on the Caribbean to address its high rate of teen pregnancy.
Yesterday, the United Nations Population Fund released a report that states 20% of Caribbean women gave birth by age 10, and almost twice as many girls have at least one child by age 15. While a report from the The Pan American Health Organisation shows the leading cause of death for 15-19-year-old girls in the region, to be complications related to child birth.
Now The United Nations Population Fund has made a call for urgent action to address this situation, and provided what it says are ‘realistic, attainable goals’.
Its recommendations to regional leaders include providing quality sexual and reproductive health services, a national school curricula, and increased social and legal programs to quail violence against children. The report also suggests governments try a ‘holistic approach’, which does not dwell on changing girls’ behavior, but society attitudes instead.
The United Nations seeks to reduce the rate of teen pregnancies in the Caribbean by 20 by the year 2019. Caribbean countries with the highest rate of teen pregnancy are Belize, Guyana, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and St. Vincent & the Grenadines.

Children’s Film Competition Registration Extended
The Cayman National Cultural Foundation (CNCF) has extended its registration deadline for students wishing to enter their short films in the Young Image Makers (YIM) competition.
Budding filmmakers can now submit their entries now through Wednesday, 13th April, 2016.
The Foundation is allowing students more time over the Easter holidays to work on their films.

Caribbean nationals nabbed in US immigration sweep

FLORIDA, United States (CMC) – The United Sates Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency says it has arrested a number of Caribbean immigrants among 25 convicted criminals in a major immigration sweep in Central Florida.
ICE said that the unidentified Caribbean nationals were from the Turks and Caicos Islands, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana.
ICE said that the other migrants were from Ecuador, the United Kingdom, Morocco, Mexico, El Salvador, and Canada and that the sweep targeted “criminal aliens who pose a threat to public safety.
“All encountered had criminal records, some were felony convictions for serious or violent offences, such as manslaughter, child abuse, robbery, false imprisonment, felony DUI (driving under the influence), hit and run, armed burglary, racketeering, as well as weapons and drug violations,” ICE said.
Marc J Moore, field office director for the Miami ERO Field Office, which oversees all of Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, said “ICE prioritises convicted criminals and public safety threats for apprehension and removal”.

Youth Parliament on Monday (14)
Members of the public are invited to attend the ninth annual Youth Parliament that will take place at the Legislative Assembly to celebrate Commonwealth Day on Monday, 14 March 2016 from 10.30 a.m.
Students from nine higher education institutions will take over the Legislative Assembly for the day and will debate two topics during the proceedings that will follow the opening ceremony.
Minister Marion Hall heads to Grand Cayman
High profile dancehall artiste turned gospel minister, Marion Hall, formerly known as Lady Saw is heading to Cayman.
Hall is scheduled to perform at Concert at the Lion Center in Grand Cayman on June 5.
“I will be there in the name of Jesus,” said Hall on Instagram as she shared a promotional flyer for the event.
Hall is also expected to make her gospel debut overseas from March 25-27.

Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day
In an effort to organise activities that embody this year’s Honouring Women’s Month theme, “Step it Up for Gender Equality” the Family Resource Centre (FRC) is encouraging employers from various fields and all levels of employees to participate in Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day throughout the month of March.
The main purpose of this event is to educate the youth on various career options and to empower them to pursue careers without the boundaries of traditional gender stereotypes.

Colour Me Purple Walk/Run
The public is invited to join the Family Resource Centre, Sol and the Department of Sports for the annual Honouring Women’s Month Colour Me Purple 5K Walk/Run.
The FRC’s Colour Me Purple 5K is an annual fundraiser to support empowerment programmes for women and youth in the community. There are two separate routes planned for the annual Walk/Run, the first event will begin at Kaibo in North Side on Saturday, 12 March and the second at Smith Cove, South Church Street on Sunday, 13 March.
The event will be taking place at 6:30 a.m. for walkers and 7:00 a.m. for runners. Additionally, the event will have several colour powder bombing stations sponsored by various organisations in the community.
The FRC is encouraging walkers and runners to dedicate their participation to a woman that inspires them.

Hours extended for free HIV testing in Cayman Islands
The Public Health Department wishes to advise the public of extended hours for free HIV screenings offered at the Cayman Islands Red Cross on Huldah Avenue, George Town.
The free testing is now available from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. every Tuesday.

Express Processing Available for Business Licensing Applications
Business owners are reminded that they can obtain express processing for their trade and business licensing applications.
To receive licences within five business days, persons can pay $400 for grants and $100 for renewals, in addition to other required application fees. Along with complete applications, all fees are to be submitted to the Business Licensing Counter, located on the first floor in the Government Administration Building, between 9am and 4pm, Mondays to Fridays.

The theme for this event is “FutureVision” and the range of topics spans conservation, new energy sources, the ocean’s potential, improved health, technical literacy, economic and social sustainability, creativity, and how to deal with today’s increasingly complex world. A musical performance will be offered by the UCCI theatre arts students and food will be prepared by UCCI hospitality students.
