Cayman Brac Public Invited to LA Events

With the LA meeting on Cayman Brac, 5-7 September 2018, Hon. Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the Cayman Islands, Hon. Dr. W. McKeeva Bush, OBE, JP, Hons MSc, MLA , invites Cayman Brac residents to a number of special events. These include:

  • A special church service at Church of God Holiness in Watering Place, on Sunday, 2 September, at 11 a.m., followed by a public lunch at the Seaman’s Centre.
  • The State Opening of the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, 5 September, at 10 a.m. at Aston Rutty Centre.
  • A reception to honor past and present parliamentarians for services rendered to the Islands, particularly Cayman Brac on Wednesday evening, at 6.30 p.m. at Spelman Mclaughlin’s House, Creek, Cayman Brac. Refreshments will be served.

Four senior Caymanians terminated at Cayman Islands Port Authority

In a statement released to the media last Monday (27) from Acting Director at the Cayman Islands Port Authority, Joseph Woods, it stated four senior Caymanians have been terminated to “restructure its resources”.

No cause was given for the firing although all four had been given a certain notice period.

Woods said it was in order to meet challenges faced by the port and to allow it still to deliver the services required.

The posts terminated were stated as deputy director and chief human resources officer, deputy director and chief commercial officer, deputy director and chief operating officer, and operations and events manager.

No names were given.

 

World Water Week 26 – 31 August, 2018

Latecia Bush is Miss Teen Cayman [Islands]

Miss Teen Cayman pageant was held at the Lions Centre last Saturday (25) night.

Latecia Bush (16) of Bodden Town was chosen as Miss Teen Cayman.

She competed against Soleyah Greene (16), representing George Town; Caitlin Seymour (17) of Bodden Town, and Aliyah Harrison (17) of West Bay, who won the People’s Choice Award.

 

Update: Cayman Islands Motor Vehicle Accident Involving Heavy Equipment, 26 August

Regarding the below release,  please see the following update:

The roadway has been now been repaired and cleaned up by NRA. Even though the road way is now open, road users are urged to exercise caution at the roundabout as it is still dusty from the oil clean-up earlier.

Just after 10:15AM today, Sunday 26  August, police and other emergency services were dispatched by the 9-1-1 Communication Centre to Motor Vehicile Incident that occurred at the Chrissy Tomlinson Roundabout located in Prospect off the East West Arterial Bypass.

The incident occurred when heavy equipment fell off the trailer of a dump truck when it was maneuvering the roundabout. This caused damage to the roadway as well as oil spills. No one was injured during this incident.

The roadway between the Red Bay Roundabout and the Chrissy Tomlinson Roundabout is currently closed and motorits are being asked to use shamrock Road when heading in the Bodden Town direction from George Town.

 

Cayman Islands Immigration Ministry confirms senior official still in post

Grand Cayman (GIS) – Following the recent conviction of Deputy Chief Immigration Officer (DCIO) Garfield Wong in relation to two traffic offences, the Ministry of Immigration confirms that Mr Wong remains in post with the Immigration Department.

The Ministry will revaluate DCIO Wong’s circumstances once the court’s actions on these traffic matters are concluded.

 

Cayman Airways flight diverted for medical emergency

Cayman Airways officials say at approximately 10:35am (EST) this morning, Cayman Airways flight KX793, travelling from New York to Grand Cayman, diverted into Miami, Florida as a result of a passenger medical emergency.

The aircraft was met by medical personnel who attended to the passenger with the medical emergency. The passenger was able to be deplaned and taken for the necessary medical attention. Other passengers remained onboard while the aircraft was refueled.

The aircraft departed Miami at 11:12am (EST) for Grand Cayman.

Pay boost for Cayman Islands government school teachers

At an annual event to welcome Government school educators, Minister of Education, Hon. Julianna O’Connor Connolly says starting this September, teachers will be earning $4,300 per month and next September no government teacher will be making less than $5,000 per month.

The minister also announced improvements to some schools, the addition of special education vehicle and reiterated Government decision to enforce it’s new dress code policy for Government schools, “Take Pride in your Stride.

Cayman Islands: Roadworks Planned for Esterly Tibbetts Highway

The National Roads Authority (NRA) would like to notify the public that work will be conducted on Esterly Tibbetts Highway, near the Century 21 roundabout, on Sunday 26th August.

The work will be carried out between 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. by Island Paving, on behalf of the NRA. There will be some lane closure to facilitate the work. Motorists are asked to follow all signs and drive with caution.

The RCIPS will be holding a District Community Meeting in East End on Thursday evening, 30 August. The meeting will be held at 7:00PM at the East End Presbyterian Church Hall.

Cayman Islands NCVO Bargain Shop Extending Opening Hours

The NCVO’s New To You Bargain Shop is extending its opening hours from three to seven hours daily for the remainder of August. Starting on Monday 13th August the Bargain Shop will open from 10:00am to 6:00pm daily (except Sundays) continuing through the end of the month.

Customers can find a myriad of lightly used products on sale including household items, baby supplies, stuffed animals and toys, shoes, books, clothes (including select school uniforms) and craft items.

The New To You Bargain Shop is located at 90A Anthony Drive off Smith Road (beside the rear entrance of the Pines Retirement Home). Sales from the thrift shop benefit the NCVO’s children’s programmes.

Domestic Violence Intervention Workshop

The Family Resource (FRC) is hosting a Domestic Violence Intervention Training (DVITP) workshop for frontline professionals and interested members of the community on Wednesday, 29 to Friday, 31 August.

The free three-day workshop will be held in George Town Library, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. As well as taking part in interactive presentations from external facilitators, participants will learn about ways to support individuals and families dealing with domestic violence.

Cayman Islands: NRA Announces Construction of the Extension

The National Roads Authority (NRA) has begun construction of the Elgin Avenue extension.

The construction will extend east of Elgin Avenue from the CNB roundabout, connecting to a new two-lane roundabout, with exits to Printer Way and Crewe Road. When construction is complete motorist will not be able to access Printer Way via Thomas Russell Avenue.

Construction will last approximately four months. During the construction period drivers are asked to keep watch for traffic diversions and asked to drive with caution.

NRA thanks the public for their patience during these roadworks, and look forward to providing the benefit of these much-needed improvements.

The KAABOO Cayman festival has announced plans to donate some of its proceeds to local nonprofit agencies on the island.In a news release, festival organizers said $1 of every ticket sold would be set aside to support three local and one international charitable groups. Two-day passes for the festival are expected to start at more than $200 when the lineup of entertainers is announced at 7:30 a.m. on May 15. Cabinet will meet in the District Administration Building on Tuesday, 4 September, 2018, and the fifth meeting of the Legislative Assembly will be at the Aston Rutty Centre on the Bluff beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday, 5 September. Radio Cayman and CIGTV will broadcast the audio of the LA meeting live.

September is Literacy Month and throughout the entire month Camana Bay is celebrating and encouraging reading for all ages! This year’s theme is Unravelling Mysteries Through Reading, and activities include the return of the Scavenger Hunt, where children can unravel the clues given to them to solve a case! Once children have solved the mystery, they can return their map to Books & Books and receive 10% off their next book purchase. While children are visiting Books & Books they can enter the Advent Calendar competition by writing about their favourite book to be entered for the chance to open an advent calendar door during the holiday season.

During Literacy Month we will also be supporting a number of local authors who have written children’s books. These include Kate Ure, author of Alphabet Island, Kathleen Bodden Harris, author of Quest on a Marl Road and EK Jasmine, author of H is for Heritage. Adults can also take part in reading by attending this month’s Bookends Club at Books & Books, which will cover The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood.

Camana Bay will also be showing our support to LIFE (Literacy Is For Everyone) by contributing 10% of all mystery-themed book sales during the month of September to the organisation. Bring the family down to Camana Bay to show your support and encourage reading!

At the end of the month on Saturday, September 29 ,your children can also take part in Gamers Bay, the annual Video Gaming Tournament and Convention in the Cayman Islands, which is the ultimate event for gaming enthusiasts. On Sunday, September 30, come out and show your support for breast cancer awareness as Eclipze Hair Design & Day Spa hosts its Annual Cut-A-Thon for the 18th year in a row. Treat yourself to salon services at discounted prices and funds will benefit The Lions Club of Tropical Gardens’ Breast Cancer Awareness Fund.

Come out to Camana Bay this September and show your support for good causes while enjoying all that the Town Centre has to offer!
