Cayman Islands: Runner Assaulted in Barkers, West Bay, 18 August

ust after 6:30AM, this morning 18 August, the police responded to a call issued by the 9-1-1 Communication Centre of a woman who has been attacked and assaulted in the area of the Barkers National Park, a mangrove trail, commonly known as the dikes.

The woman, who was running in the area, was attacked from behind by a man that was wearing a blue t-shirt on his face and beige coloured shorts. The man was described him as being about 5ft 6in tall, of brown complexion and possibly in his 20’s. The man ran away from the scene of the incident, into the dikes where he disappeared. The victim received some minor scratches, but did not require medical attention.

The police have launched an investigation into the matter and have issued this release in order to ensure that the public is aware of this incident and they are asking that persons, especially women, take extra precautions to ensure their personal safety, such as:

– Select areas that are well lit and areas that are not too overgrown to walk or run, as well as walking routes that are popular to other walkers and runners.
– Do not walk alone, especially in the early morning and late evenings when it’s still dark.
– Have a cell phone with you when you are out so that you can call 9-1-1 in an emergency.
– Be vigilant when walking and running and ensure that you can hear and see what is happening around you.
– Let someone know where you’re going and an estimate time of how long you will be gone.
– If you feel like you are being followed, change your path and stay in lit areas, call 9-1-1 if it persists.

Cayman Islands: Dump Truck Over-Turn on Round-About on Shamrock Road, 16 August

On Wednesday 16 August, just before 5pm, Police and other Emergency Services responded to a 9-1-1 Communication Centre call for service, where the driver of dump truck had lost control of the vehicle and it overturned, causing the load it was carrying to spill onto the road.

This incident caused a major back up of traffic as the exit from Shamrock Road, South Sound and towards George Town was obstructed by both the truck and the load that spilled into the road.

The driver of the truck received only minor injuries.

 

Medical Products Recalled in Cayman Islands

As a precautionary measure, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States has issued a worldwide recall of all liquid products under the brand names Major®, Rugby® and Leader®, due to possible bacterial contamination of these products.

If you are in possession of any of these liquid products from any of these brands obtained from any facility, including hospitals and pharmacies in the Cayman Islands, please stop using them immediately.

Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Samuel Williams-Rodriguez encourages all patients who may have obtained any of these products to contact their physician or local pharmacy for more information.

Cayman Islands School Orientation 2017 Date Clarification

Recently, the Department of Education released the orientation schedule for 2017-2018 School year. There has been a request for clarification of which high school students are expected to attend the various dates in the schedule.

The orientation/induction time and who is to be present is dependent on the high school the student will attend.

If the student will be attending Clifton Hunter High school (CHHS):

23 August: Only newly registered students in Years 7 through 11 are to attend from 9:00am-12:00 pm. Please Note: CHHS orientation does not include Year 7 students that are transitioning from their primary school.

If the student will be attending John Gray High School (JGHS):

23 August: Induction for all Year 7 students and orientation for all newly registered students in Years 8-11 is from 8:00am-1:30 pm.

A reminder for all high school students:

24 August: All students in Year 7 & Year 11 are to attend from 8:00am-2:50 pm.

25 August: School resumes for all high school students at 8:00 am.

Grenada police hunt for counterfeit Eastern Caribbean dollars in circulation

Grenada police Wednesday urged people to be on the lookout for counterfeit East Caribbean dollars.

It said that the counterfeit EC$50 and EC$100 dollar notes were now in circulation here and that they had the serial numbers VM033672 and SR380132 respectively.

“The public is urged to exercise utmost vigilance and caution when doing business. Small business operators such as bus drivers, taxi operators, shop keepers, vendors and the likes are urged to be on their guard.”

The police did not say whether the circulation of the counterfeit currency was linked to the island’s Carnival celebrations that ended on Tuesday. But they warned persons that it is a criminal offense to have in their possession or pass on counterfeit money.

Grenada along with six other Caribbean countries, namely Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Montserrat and Anguilla share the same currency.

Cayman Islands: Vehicle Fire on North Church Street, Wed 16 August

Just after 12.30pm, Wed 16 August, the police and other emergency services responded to a 9-1-1- Communication Centre’s call for service, to a report of a vehicle on fire, outside a restaurant on North Church Street, George Town.

This incident caused a heavy build-up of traffic and on the arrival of the Police and the Fire Department; traffic was diverted to ensure the safety of members of the public.

After putting out the fire and examining the vehicle, the Fire Department determined that this was an electrical fire and there was nothing suspicious seen at this time.

The roadway is now cleared for regular use.

Triple tropical threat looms in the Atlantic, Caribbean [Wed 16 Aug]

Two of three budding tropical systems in the Atlantic will approach the Caribbean, Central America and the United States in the coming days.

Three batches of thunderstorms are moving westward across the tropical Atlantic within a swath of moisture at midweek.

From west to east, the three systems have been dubbed 91L, 92L and 93L.

Such a designation is assigned between 90 and 99, when there is potential for the formation of a tropical depression or storm within several days. The “L” represents potential formation for the Atlantic Ocean.

91L to enter Caribbean Sea this weekend

“Nintey-one L may become a tropical depression or storm as it moves through the Lesser Antilles on Friday and the Caribbean Sea on Saturday,” according to AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski.

This feature is likely to bring an uptick in showers and thunderstorms in the Windward and southern Leeward Islands to end the week.

How much strengthening occurs will determine the intensity of rainfall, winds and seas. This system already has a weak circulation.

Inhibitive strong winds aloft are projected to diminish in the path of 91L, which may allow the feature to become organized and strengthen.

The most likely path of 91L is westward across the Caribbean this weekend, which could bring the system near Central America early next week.

92L may pass north of the Caribbean Sea next week

Steering winds are likely to guide the second area of disturbed weather farther north than 91L.
“We project 92L to pass over or just north of the Leeward Islands this weekend,” Kottlowski said.

Some dry air has become drawn into 92 L, which could hinder its development for a time.
Like 91L, this feature also has a weak circulation.

“If 92L can overcome the dry air, it has a chance at becoming a depression or tropical storm this weekend,” Kottlowski said.

A track just north of the islands of the northern Caribbean, especially the mountainous islands of Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and Cuba, would favor development and strengthening, as opposed to a track right over the islands.

At this time, 92L represents the greatest potential for approaching the U.S. or its coastal waters next week.

Following a wave of non-related thunderstorms this weekend, an uptick in thunderstorms from 92L could reach the northwestern Bahamas and South Florida by Tuesday.
93L may remain at sea

The system farthest to the east, 93L, will take a west-northwest past the next few days.

“However, a turn toward the northwest is likely this weekend,” Kottlowski said.

“Ninety-three L may never be a threat to land in the western part of the Atlantic basin,” Kottlowski said.

This system, which had a circulation immediately after departing the coast of Africa may become a tropical system this weekend and could strengthen significantly if it avoids dry air and strong westerly winds aloft next week.

Real Atlantic hurricane season is just beginning

Additional batches of thunderstorms will continue to roll westward from Africa in the coming weeks.

The next six to eight weeks represent the heart of the hurricane season.

As the peak of the hurricane season approaches, on Sept. 10, the likelihood of tropical storm and hurricane formation will increase due to warm water, shrinking dry air and diminishing winds.

Cayman Islands DoA investigates report of animal cruelty- received Friday, 11 August

Around 3:30pm on Friday, 11 August 2017, the 9-1-1 Communications Centre received a report of animal cruelty from the Humane Society. The call was regarding a dog that had been brought in for medical assistance by its owner on Tuesday, 8 August. The dog appeared to have burns along its body.

The 9-1-1 dispatcher contacted the Department of Agriculture (DoA) and an Animal Welfare Officer was dispatched immediately. To date, the investigation remains active and contact has been made with the dog’s owner.

At this time, it appears that the dog’s burns are chemical in nature and may be the result of a misguided attempt to control external parasites. The source of these burns continues to be investigated, as well allegations of neglect.

The DoA is leading the investigation on this case, with support from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service. Anyone who may have information to assist with this investigation is asked to call the Department of Agriculture’s Animal welfare Officer at 947-3090.

The Imperial Bronze Kia Sorento that was report stolen on 10 August, has been located by the police on Friday 11 August on Maclendon Drive in George Town. The vehicle was returned to the owner’s possession and there was no damage done to the vehicle.

Two people shot in the Barbados capital

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Aug 11 2017 – Police were on Friday investigating a shooting incident which occurred sometime after 3 p.m. in the area of the Fairchild Street Market.

A 41-year-old woman and a man in his late 30 were shot during the incident.

Preliminary investigations are that the assailant saw the male who is known to him in the area of the Fairchild Street Market and opened fire. As a result, the female who was sitting by one of the stalls was shot in her right thigh, while the male was shot on his foot and in his back.

They were both being treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Cayman Islands court reaffirms interim payments in merger dissents

Pursuant to s.238 of the Cayman Islands Companies Law (2016 Revision), shareholders who are dissatisfied with the price they receive for their shares in a merger are often entitled to dissent and to have the “fair value” of their shares determined by the Grand Court.

The jurisprudence surrounding this relatively new species of proceedings continues to evolve at a rapid rate. In the most recent installment, the Court has reaffirmed its jurisdiction to award dissenters an interim payment early in the proceedings, in the amount for which they are likely to succeed at trial (in this case, the merger price, on the basis that the company had effectively affirmed that it represented the fair value of the shares).

Cayman Islands police release on two stolen vehicles Thu 10th August ’17

Just after 7.15pm, yesterday 10 August, an imperial bronze Kia Sorento was reported stolen from the Owen Roberts International Airport parking lot. The vehicle left had been parked sometime after 5AM and it appears that the vehicle was taken just before 7:15AM.

Stolen Yamaha Motorcycle, 10 August

Just after 11:20am, yesterday 10 August, police responded to a report of  a stolen motorcycle on Aurora Drive, West Bay. The motorcycle was last seen at 8:45AM that morning at a residence on Aurora Drive, but was missing by 10:45AM.

The bike is a blue, black and white Yamaha XT225 with registration plates 115215. A picture of the actual bike is attached.

US: Woman, man found fatally shot in likely domestic killing, cops say [Caymanian is confirmed as man]

Two people were found dead early Thursday as the result of an apparent murder-suicide, Pembroke Pines police said.

Shani Bennette, 39, and Ronald Bennette, 38, were found inside a vehicle on the 1100 block of Southwest 110 Avenue shortly after 12:30 a.m., according to Sgt. Darryl Curtiss.

Police went to the location after getting a 911 call.

Both people were dead from apparent gunshot wounds.

“This is an ongoing investigation in its preliminary stages and at present appears to be domestic-related,” Curtiss said.

The relationship between Shani Bennette and Ronald Bennette was not disclosed.

Police have declined to release further information about the case.

UPDATE: We can now confirm the man is a Caymanian. CBS Miami have said Bennette worked for Spirit Airlines. He and his wife had a young child.

 

Honda Civic stolen from Cayman Islands Bayshore Mall parking lot sometime Thu, 3 August

Thursday (3) police received a report of a vehicle stolen from the parking lot of the Bayshore Mall near the George Town waterfront. The car was last seen at about 8AM when the owner parked it, and discovered missing around 8PM. The details of the car are as follows:

Cayman Islands: Product Recall – Alka Seltzer

Foster’s Food Fair-IGA would like to announce that the company Bayer plc is voluntarily recalling batches of Alka-Seltzer due to an issue with the blister foil. A problem with the blistering process has resulted in the potential for small holes or cracks being present in the aluminum layer of the tablet blister material, which are not visible to the consumer. This could result in compromise of the moisture barrier provided by the aluminum layer. Bayer has assessed this defect as unlikely to pose a safety risk for consumers, therefore affected batches are not being recalled to patient level.
Foster’s IGA carries Alka-Seltzer and has been affected by this recall. The affected products have been pulled from the shelves.
The products affected are as follows:

No other Alka-Seltzer branded products are included within this recall.
Customers should check the UPC’s on Alka-Seltzer branded products in their homes to be sure none of the affected product has been purchased. We encourage all customers who have purchased this product from any of our Foster’s IGA locations to return the affected product for a full refund. Please discontinue use of any affected product.

Cayman Islands: Garbage fees reminder

The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) is urging business operators, owners and strata to pay their outstanding garbage fees and to ensure their properties meet DEH’s standards.

Businesses or properties (including plazas and strata with a central waste-management container) with accounts still in arrears, or that do not otherwise meet the DEH’s requirements, will not be recommended by the DEH for approval to either the Trades and Businesses Licensing Board, the Hotels Licensing Board, or the Liquor Licensing Board, during the upcoming scheduled board meetings, unless all fees and other DEH requirements are in compliance.

All other non-licensing properties/strata with outstanding garbage fees should also promptly settle these arrears to avoid disruption of waste collection services and the implementation of other actions.

Payments can be made at any of the local post offices or at the DEH’s main office at 580 North Sound Road from 8.30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. In the Sister Islands, payments can only be made at the District Administration office.

The Family Resource Centre (FRC), in continuing its outreach to the Sister Islands, can confirm that next month’s three-day domestic violence intervention workshop will take place at the Brac Reef hotel.
The free training will take place in the hotel’s conference room on 29 to 31 August, from 8.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The workshop is for front line professionals who interface with domestic violence victims and their families.

Cayman Islands FATCA and CRS reporting deadline extended
The Cayman Islands have announced a final extension of the 2017 deadline for US FATCA and Common Reporting Standard (CRS) reporting to 31 August 2017.

The Cayman Islands Ministry of Financial Services and Home Affairs has announced a further and final extension to the deadline for reporting under US FATCA and the Common Reporting Standard (CRS) in relation to the calendar year 2016. All such reports must be made via the Cayman Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) Portal by 4pm on 31 August 2017 (extended from the previous deadline of 31 July 2017).
The announcement stresses that this is a “final extension and no further extensions will be given”. As a result Cayman Financial Institutions (FIs) with reporting obligations should now consider submitting their reports as soon as possible. All reporting Cayman FIs must submit a report, even if they have no reportable accounts. Failure to comply with the Cayman reporting obligations is an offence under Cayman law and may result in a fine of up to KYD50,000.
The deadline for Cayman Financial Institutions (FIs) to register and notify their status to the Cayman Islands Tax Information Authority (Cayman TIA) via the Cayman AEOI Portal remains 31 July 2017. For further details, see “Cayman Islands extends CRS and FATCA registration dates”.

Cayman Islands Water Authority to install new pipeline in Bodden Town

Water Authority – Cayman began installing a new pipeline along Condor Road in Bodden Town last Thursday (20) and the work is expected to continue for six weeks. The anticipated end date is Friday, Sept. 1.

The new pipeline is essential to improve the operational flexibility of the water distribution system.

The project will affect the portion of Condor Road between the intersection with Shamrock Road and the intersection with Anton Bodden Drive.

Pipe-laying works will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday, and trenches will be backfilled at the end of each working day for safety purposes.

Traffic signs will be erected at the work site, and drivers are urged to exercise caution in the area.

Affected customers of any water service interruptions will be notified three working days in advance of the planned service interruption, via hand-delivered notices.

The Water Authority apologises for any inconvenience.
