Forty plus years ago, I first witnessed the flying fish. A lady near me said to her friend “Look at those poor birds. They fly so close to the water they drown.”

I have since wanted to capture these fish so I brought my D7000 and my 120-300 mm F2.8 Deck six was the closest I could get to the water. I kept trying to focus with no luck all I saw was water.  I decided to use it as a shotgun. I had my gun stock for the 120mm with me. I found that at 600mm it was too hard to handle so I went to my 1.4x.

I always had a few people stop and ask me what I was photographing. They would stand for two to three minutes and leave. I was seeing one of these about every 5 minutes at best. They were never in a large schools as I had first seen. I had the fish right above the lens actually touching the upper end then I would snap as i covered the fish.

I was a long way from getting great pictures. but for that distance it is not too bad.

One more side note, because there was a gun stock in my luggage and a metal monopod in my luggage It was searched by TSA both ways. I would expect no less.
