CPA to conduct seminar for Cayman Islands MLAs in early August

The Cayman Islands Legislative Assembly will conduct a post-election seminar on all aspects of practising democracy within the Westminster system primarily to benefit newly elected MLAs to the House.

Conducted by the Cayman Islands Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), the seminar will be held at the Legislative Assembly, starting with an opening ceremony from 9-9.30 am on Thursday, 3rd August 2017.

Topics to be covered include the roles and responsibilities of MLAs, including backbenchers; the evolution of democracy and the Constitution in the Cayman Islands, parliamentary privilege, party organisation within parliament, practice and procedure in the House and parliamentary committees.

Resource persons making presentations include Secretary General of the CPA, Mr. Akbar Khan, Speaker of the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago, Hon. Bridgid Annisette-George, former Speaker of Bermuda Parliament, Hon. Randolph Horton, Clerk of the Parliament of Jamaica, Mrs. Heather Cooke, former Speaker of the Cayman Islands Legislative Assembly, Hon. Mary J Lawrence and former Cayman Islands Minister of Education, Mr. Rolston Anglin.
