Cayman Prep secure Boys’ Primary Football League (PFL) Opening Rally title

Cayman Prep continued their recent dominance in the CUC Primary Football League (PFL) by lifting the 2018 PFL Opening Rally cup following an exciting 2-0 victory over Prospect Primary in the final this past Saturday, September 22.

An opening goal from Cayman Prep’s top scorer Jaxon Cover and a second from Jani Carnegie late in the second half was enough to seal the win over a very talented Prospect Primary team. The high level of play witnessed during the final was a testament to the two teams’ endurance as they battled through a series of five games throughout the heat and humidity just to get to the final.

Cayman Prep’s goal keeper Peyton Corbin was solid between the posts as he pulled off a number of key saves to keep his team in front and on course for the win. That, along with the goal scoring exploits of Jaxon Cover coupled with a strong display from the Prep defence sealed the victory.

Prospect Primary played their hearts out and on a different day, could have lifted the prestigious cup themselves.

Cayman Prep’s road to the final included a 4-1 victory over Triple C, a 2-0 win over eventual finalists Prospect Primary and a 6-0 victory over George Town Primary on their way to topping Zone B.
Prospect Primary finished runners-up in Zone C with a 3-0 defeat of George Town Primary and 3-1 win over Triple C. Their only blemish was losing 0-2 to Zone B champions and eventual overall champions Cayman Prep.

In the quarter finals, Cayman Prep eliminated Zone A runners-up Red Bay Primary 3-0 thanks to goals from Jaxon Cover and Zach Brooks and Prospect Primary ended Cayman Brac’s journey with a 2-0 win with Prospect benefitting from an unfortunate Cayman Bract own goal and a strike from Nacir Smith.

In the semi finals, Cayman Prep overcame Cayman International Blue 4-0 with Jaxon Cover grabbing a hat trick and Phin Ellison rounding off the scoring. Prospect Primary slipped past defending 2017 Opening Rally champions St. Ignatius Catholic School 3-2 in a nail-biting penalty shootout after neither school could break the deadlock during regulation time.

In the third place game, Cayman International Blue defeated St. Ignatius Catholic School 3-1 with Cayman International’s Danny Lyne scoring a hat trick and St. Ignatius’ Kyan Okoli grabbing his team’s lone goal.

Summarizing the days play, from Zone A, St. Ignatius and Red Bay advanced to the quarter finals; from Zone B, it was Cayman Prep, Prospect Primary and Triple C, and from Zone C, Savannah Primary, Cayman International Blue and Cayman Brac advanced to the second round.

The Ronnie Roach Most Valuable Player award for the final was presented to Cayman Prep’s Jaxon Cover who scored the opening goal in the final and a majority of Cayman Prep’s goals throughout the tournament.

Special thanks to youth officials Jonathan Holness, Kandre Amerally, Caleb McFarlane, Alex Dailey, Jayden Wright and Matthew Bodden who all did a superb job controlling the games throughout the day, and to Dwayne Ebanks, Andrew Holness, Chastine Rankine and Shirley Amerally for overseeing the youth officials and recording the days results.

The 2018 CUC PFL and GPFL regular seasons begin this Saturday, September 29 at venues across the Island.
