Cayman Islands police in Eastern Districts advise of camping locations and safety tips ahead of Easter weekend

Camping during Easter weekend has traditionally been a popular activity in the Eastern Districts. Ahead of this weekend, therefore, we would like to advise the public of some of the sites specifically designated for this activity, as well as some general safety tips.

The North Side District Council has designated five sites for Easter weekend camping; all of these areas should be clearly marked with a sign that reads “Camp Here for Easter”.

1. The site east of the Old Cayman Kai Condos
2. Cayman Kai public Beach
3. Kaibo public camping grounds
4. Public property adjacent to Ivory Point
5. The entire Ivory Point area owned by Dart – this is also being made accessible to the public for camping.

Other camping sites may be designated in other locations in the Eastern Districts for this weekend; however these are the five locations proactively designated as such.

General Tips

Campers normally remain peaceful and pose no concerns for themselves or those nearby. However, we also receive complaints regarding noise, anti-social behavior, and trespassers on properties adjacent to campgrounds. Therefore we would like to remind the public of the following so that all can enjoy a safe and peaceful holiday weekend.

1. Camp only in locations that are designated as campgrounds

2. Do not leave campfires unattended

3. Clean up all trash from campsites

4. Do not leave young children unsupervised near campfires or the onshore near the water

5. Do not play music loudly, especially during the evening hours (some campsites have enforced “quiet hours” posted);

6. Avoid walking across private property to access campsites. All campsites should be accessible by public footpaths.

NO LITTERING AND RECYCLE OVER EASTER

The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) is reminding members of the public that

littering is not only unsightly but it is illegal and offenders can be prosecuted. Litter is

often seen in our communities; however, it is often most noticeable on beaches and

picnic spots, after the Easter holiday campers and other visitors have left.

Litter such as fishing lines and plastics left on the beaches can pose a threat to

wildlife when washed into the sea. While litter left on land can serve as a harbourage for

rodents and other pests. Broken bottles and sharp objects are also a danger to others.

Therefore, the DEH is reminding everyone to be mindful of the health of the environment and

to leave all areas used clean and free of litter.

Everyone is being advised to take along sufficient garbage bags to hold all the

waste generated by friends and family. All waste should be properly secured and left in a

visible area/ or the curb side for collection by the DEH crew or placed in one of several

large commercial containers placed throughout the districts. No waste should be left on

the beaches, the campsites or disposed of in the sea or vegetation.

The public is also asked to take along separate receptacles – either garbage bags marked with a permanent marker indicating the recyclable product inside, or, bins marked to take in recyclable products – to make every effort to recycle whilst camping. Members of the public are then asked to take these bags / bins and discard of the bags or the contents of the bins either at DEH receptacles (for aluminium cans) or the many private recycling initiatives islands-wide in particular those located for ease at the grocery. By recycling camping waste, a large portion of the waste stream can be diverted from the landfills.

Commercial containers will be located at the following eight (8) public locations

on Grand Cayman: Colliers Public Beach, East End; Kaibo Public Beach, North Side;

Coe-Woods Public Beach, Bodden Town; Public Boat Ramp, South Sound; Smith Cove

Public Beach, George Town; 7-Mile Public Beach, West Bay Road; Northwest Point

Boat Ramp, West Bay and Barkers National Park, West Bay.

In addition, persons should not throw garbage from moving vehicles or place

garbage on another person’s property. This also unacceptable and it is illegal.

We can all do our part—and that includes reporting littering to the police. Under

the Litter Law, convictions can result in $500 fines, and / or imprisonment.
