• The NRA hosts the first Road Safety Week conference in early October.
• The conference will features both local and international speakers.

 

GRAND CAYMAN (GIS) – Road safety will be the key focus on the National Roads Authority’s (NRA) upcoming conference.

Set to take place over four days in early October, NRA’s Road Safety Week features a wide array of both local and international speakers.

“This is the first time we are hosting an event like this,” comments Edward Howard, NRA’s Acting Managing Director. “When the public think about our roads and what it takes to make our roads safe the NRA is usually what comes to mind. And while they are right in that conclusion, there are many other stakeholders. This conference gives us the opportunity to get all those stakeholders together sharing their knowledge with one another,” explains Mr. Howard.

“Being the Minister responsible for infrastructure and roads I’m pleased that the NRA is hosting this event,” says Hon. Joseph Hew, Minister for Commerce, Planning and Infrastructure.

“As the public is well aware, the NRA has been hard at work improving the safety of our road networks and we can already see the results. However the Cayman Islands is small and has limited space, so as we move forward we need to be innovative in the way we manage our road network. Our roads are not only for drivers, but for pedestrians and cyclists to all share. We are commitment to creating a safer environment for everyone, and having all stakeholders together will help us to find a solution that is best suited for the needs of our community,” Mr. Hew states.

Special guest to the conference is road safety expert Michael Dreznes. Mr. Dreznes is the Vice President of the International Road Federation (IRF), a global not-for-profit organisation that assist member countries in moving towards better, safer and smarter road systems.

Having the IRF share its knowledge at the conference, is part of a strategy by the NRA to fulfil its vision of building a world-class workforce.

“In this fast-paced world of innovation and progress, it’s an incredibly exciting time to be in the roads industry. The NRA is invested in employee professional development” says NRA Chief HR Officer Shena Ebanks.

The NRA will host IRF workshops at the conference that will focus on a variety of topics including road audits and innovative financing mechanism for road safety.

The conference will also feature a number of local speakers from a number of government entities, private businesses and non-profit organisations including the NRA, the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, Cayman Islands Insurance Association and the Cayman Islands Motorcycle Association.

The conference will take place from the 1 – 4 October at the Ritz Carlton Grand Cayman. The event is open to all government departments, road safety stakeholder and the public.
