Cayman Islands new stamps feature Christmas vignettes

The Cayman Islands Postal Service has already begun spreading Christmas cheer this year, with the issue of a colourful set of seasonal stamps.

Four stamps and a first day cover that showcase local Christmas decorations comprise the Cayman Islands Christmas 2017 issue.

It features the decorations put up each year by the Bodden sisters on South Church Street and by the Crighton family at their home on Shamrock Road in Spotts.

At Christmas time, both families turn their homes into twinkling wonderlands, which over the years have become a must-see seasonal tradition for thousands of residents and tourists alike. The stamps pay tribute to them and all the other decorators on the three islands who celebrate the Christmas spirit with exhibitions of holiday decorations and lights.

Available in denominations of 25¢, 75¢, 80¢ and $1, the stamps feature images by Ms Carmin Godfrey.

The 25¢ stamp depicts a nativity scene at the home of Ms Maxine and Ms Maureen Bodden. The 75¢ stamp celebrates many versions of Santa, depicted in a decoration at the Crighton home. Meanwhile, the 80¢ stamp depicts a scene on location at the Bodden home that showcases the popular carollers who go all round the island every year.

The $1 stamp depicts Santa and his elves in the snow as seen in a Crighton home display. The stamp also highlights the long tradition, since the 70s, carried on by the Crightons of decorating their yard.

The official First Day Cover, sale price $3.60, also features a display of lights at the centre of the Crighton home.

Postmaster General Ms Sheena Glasgow commented: “The Postal Service sincerely thanks Ms Godfrey for providing us with these beautiful scenes. We have captured them on what I hope will become a cherished stamp issue that hails the Christmas spirit and celebrations in our islands.”

“I am delighted to commend this stamp issue to the general public, to stamp lovers, First Day Cover enthusiasts and collectors everywhere,” she added.
