Cayman Islands Joint Marine Unit rescue boat from the Sand Bar, 31 August

From RCIPS

Sometime after 6PM yesterday 31 August, the Joint Marine Unit responded to a distress call of a boat that was that was taking in water, located in the area of Stingray City and towed the vessel with all its crew and passengers safely ashore.

The officers who responded were on board the Niven D and Tornado vessels. They arrived at the location of the distressed vessel, where one crew member and four passengers on board. All people present were found to be in good health and they safely towed the vessel to a local docking station.

“Acting Police Inspector Damenian Maxwell  (Marine Commander) said “We were pleased that all persons were in good health and accounted for, however, boat operators are reminded that having adequate safety equipment on board is crucial, as things can go wrong quickly at sea. We also ask that boat operators take special care in ensuring that their vessels are properly examined and in good working order prior to deploying.  You are responsible for the safety of your passengers.”

Attached is a picture of the Tornado for reference.

  1. Sand Bar and Stingray City are two different places. If the media continues to help people confuse the names its going to be harder to rescue them from the right place in the future. (Though I’m sure 911 has a system of questions for this already, given its ubiquity.)
