An annual Cayman Islands swimming tradition: The 2016 Lions Sprint Meet

SwimmingThe Lions Club and Stingray Swim Club (SSC) host the annual, fun-filled and fast-paced Lions Sprint meet on Saturday May 21st at the Lions Aquatic Centre. This meet is a partnership between the Lions Club — the visionary service club that first saw the need for a swimming pool; and Stingray Swim Club, Cayman’s first competitive age group club which is based at the Lions Aquatic Centre.
This Lions Sprint Meet, an extraordinary community service project, is sponsored by the Lions Club and organised and operated by SSC. There are no meet fees charged and the meet is open to swimmers from all of Cayman’s clubs allowing as many young swimmers as possible to swim, or to try out competitive swimming for the first time. The swimmers compete for High Points trophies and first place golden honours in Sprint distances in each of the strokes: 25m for 6 & Under and 7-8; and 50m for the 10 & Under, 11-12, 13-14 and 15 & Over age groups
Lion President Ewan Jacques.encourages all parents, friends and family of swimmers and members of the community to come to the meet to support Cayman’s young swimmers. “This pool was built so that all Caymanian children could learn to swim. Stingray honours the vision of the Lions Club every year by hosting this meet, organising it for us and allowing all children to swim for free. We truly appreciate the partnership that has developed with Stingray over the years, and we congratulate them on their continued successes both in the pool here in Cayman and overseas, and in open water competition.”
Stingray Head Coach, David Pursley commented: “The Lions Sprint Meet is an important one for our club. The Lions Aquatic Centre has been the home of Stingray Swim Club for 20 years — has seen swimmers strive for personal excellence, set National and CIASA records and train to take part in international competitions as important as the Olympics. Our swimmers look forward to this Sprint Meet, as do our parents and volunteers. We extend our thanks to the Officials who volunteer their time… and we encourage everyone to come down and support our swimmers in this amazing, community event.”
After the Lions Sprint Meet, SSC will be participating in the CIASA Butterfield 800m Sea Swim on May 28th; the Landon Von Kanel Swim Meet, June 2 — 5th  which offers a full array of events — sprint, middle and long distances and the Flowers One Mile Sea Swim on June 11th.
