A Robbery and an Assault outside Liquor-Licensed Premises Cap Busy Weekend of Twenty Arrests

A second robbery on Friday night (in addition to the robbery of a handbag previously reported in Bodden Town) and an incident with restricted weapons, both at liquor-licensed premises, capped a busy weekend for police.

Police received a report over the weekend of a robbery that took place Friday night, 21 April, just past 11:30AM, near Singh’s Roti Shop and Bar on Shedden Road in George Town. A man reported that he had stepped outside the bar next to the roti shop to make a phone call, when two men ran up and forced him to the ground, and cut his wallet out of his back pocket.

The victim was not injured in the incident. Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact George Town CID at 949-4222.

Approximately two hours later, just before 1:30PM early Saturday morning, 22 April, the 9-1-1 Communications Centre dispatched officers to a report of a fight outside the Meringue Town Restaurant on Boilers Road in central George Town. A man was reported to be in possession of a knife and fighting with other men in the parking lot. When police arrived the suspect was seen armed with both a knife and machete, behaving in a hostile manner. He refused to obey police commands to drop these weapons and began advancing on officers; a Taser was deployed and the suspect was contained and taken into custody.

The man, age 37 of George Town, was arrested for disorderly conduct at a licensed premises and possession of a restricted weapon. The man has been charged with these offences as well as two counts of Indecent Assault, and is appearing in court today. The indecent assault charges relate to behaviour towards a woman while the man was in the bar before the fight and the arrival of police.

Police would like to remind the public that it is a criminal offence not only to carry restricted weapons, such as machetes, into liquor-licensed premises, but also to be in possession of such weapons in the vicinity of liquor-licensed premises, such as in parking lots or in vehicles parked near liquor-licensed premises. (Penal Code, 2016 Revision, Part III, Section 81 (d) and (e).)
Altogether police took twenty people into custody over the weekend and responded to 104 reports on Friday night alone.

“This was a very busy Friday night for our officers, who responded to a number of serious incidents,” said Robert Graham, Superintendent of Uniform and District Operations, “and alcohol appears to a factor in many of these. The law provides for measures to be taken to improve safety in and around liquor-licensed establishments, and we will continue to work with liquor-license holders to take advantage of these.”
