Going to a bar restroom is rarely a pleasant experience — especially if you have to worry about people peeping on you while you pee.

While performing in Berwyn, Illinois, comedian Tamale Rocks discovered that a full-length mirror in the women’s restroom of a bar called Cigars and Stripes was actually a two-way mirror .

Behind the mirror was a janitorial closet, where one could, presumably, watch a woman going to the restroom without her knowledge. Rocks posted a video of her discovery, which soon sparked a significant amount of controversy.

In a phone interview with Jezebel, Cigars and Stripes owner Ronnie Lotz fiercely defended the bathroom mirror, claiming that it was part of the Halloween-themed decor.

” I will burn this ******* place to the ground before I get rid of that mirror,” said Lotz. “Do you know how much joy that mirror has brought to us? We’re synonymous with Halloween. We do a freaky family fun day, and all the kids look in the mirror. This is a fun house, honey, and if you don’t like the two-way mirror, go **** yourself.”

Lotz dismissed the controversy, claiming the mirror was nothing more than an old prop used to prank unsuspecting patrons on Halloween.

“We used to hang a witch’s head in there so that the girls would pee, and they’d look into a dingy closet and be all weirded out,” said Lotz. “We specialize in making people feel very uncomfortable. It’s why we’re successful today. If you get it, you get it. If you don’t, stay home.”

Lotz also said that customers have commented about the mirror previously on Yelp — however in the past 24 hours, the review page for Cigars and Stripes has received some very colorful remarks.

Rocks’ video quickly climbed to the top of Reddit, where it sparked conflicting views about the mirror. On one hand, some users feel the outrage is excessive.

However, as Reddit user IAlbatross points out, the idea of not knowing whether or not your bathroom is bugged is more of a trick than a treat:

“No one should enter a bathroom and have to worry about someone watching them. You should be safe to stumble into the bathroom after five brewskis and pee to your heart’s content without doing a perimeter check and sweep of the room first.”

While it is still unclear what kind of effect this will have on Cigars and Stripes business, Lotz’s strong words have made it pretty clear that the mirror isn’t going anywhere.
