Emmanuel Nathan, West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) vice-president, lashed out at Darren Sammy for his scathing comments against the cricket board following West Indies’ win in the T20 WC 2016, terming it “irrelevant, demeaning, insulting and unfortunate”.

“To spoil what was a tremendous achievement for the Caribbean civilization with comments that are totally irrelevant and demeaning and insulting to the Caribbean people, I believe was rather unfortunate,” Nathan told Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) on Wednesday (April 6). “So to try to make it look like the board was inefficient in any way is rather unfortunate.”

Sammy had criticised the board for meting out unfair treatment with respect to the pay dispute that the players are fighting against for several years. He also took a dig at the selection panel by stating that he didn’t know when he would get a chance to play with the same set of players again.

“So the players complained that for the World Cup their fees went down maybe by 20,000 or thereabouts. But they did not say that the week before they got the World Cup contract all of them signed contracts for the regional competition where their fees went up by 80,000, 140,000, 145,000, and 75,000. They did not say that,” Nathan said.

Soon after beating England by four wickets in a thrilling final encounter at the Eden Gardens, Sammy recounted how the team manager had to run around to arrange for the players’ jerseys on time. Nathan, however, said that the West Indies’ T20I captain didn’t narrate the complete story when he chose to criticise the board publicly.

“The date was coming, the players had not consented to go to play so the company delivered the uniforms without the numbers of them because we were not sure which players we going to play.

“So when the logistic officer left the Caribbean for Dubai he had a ticket in his hands to go to pick up the uniforms in Calcutta, put the numbers on them and carry them himself to the team well in advance of the World Cup,” he concluded.
