DIRECTOR, Institute of Africa & Diaspora Studies, IADS, University of Lagos, UNILAG, Prof. Muyiwa Falaiye has said the newly formed institute in partnership with the University of West Indies, was aimed at discussing timely and relevant issues about Africa, the Caribbean and the world at large.

Prof. Falaiye disclosed this at the institute’s bi-monthly country-focus discourse organised to commemorate Liberian President, Mr. George Weah’s inauguration tagged, Liberia: for democracy to survive, that had speakers such as Dr. Friday Aworara, UNILAG; Dr. Moses Yakubu, UNIBEN; Dr. Tony Okeregbe, UNILAG and Prof. Austin Nwagbara.

On the essence of the bi-monthly dialogue, the Director, IADS said that, “The essence of the dialogue is to focus on countries that have specific issues arising that are relevant not only to the world , but specifically have great impact on Nigeria and Africa.”

“Having Liberia election and the transition from President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to President Weah, made it important for us to focus on the country. Weah’s emergence speaks hope for the common man, especially the youths in Nigeria that leardership was not a function of birth, position or class “ noted the Director.

On his part, Dr Obi Iwuagwu, Director, IADS noted the institute established in partnership with University of West Indies in the Caribbean, was aimed at projecting the image of Africa.

His words, “ The institute looks at everything Africa, in Africa and in Diaspora. By our calendar this year, this lecture will be bi-monthly. We have done the first one in January, it is going to be focused on any Africa or Caribbean country that is trending or have an event. Like this one on Liberia’s president,” added Iwuagwu.
