Why six US trafficking ambassadors are backing this bill
By Krysta Bisnauth, Freedom United

We learned a lot from Wednesday’s timely discussion between two former US Trafficking in Persons Ambassadors. They talked about the need for stronger protections for migrant workers and California’s Assembly Bill 1362 which seeks to stop traffickers posing as foreign labor recruiters. Thank you to everyone who joined us. If you missed it—or want to revisit the highlights—you can now watch the full recording here. |

“If those women had traveled to the United States with a registered foreign labor recruiter… they would never have been so vulnerableas to be in forced prostitution.” — Luis C.deBaca
We were honored to host former US Ambassadors to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, Luis C.deBaca and John Cotton Richmond. They both voiced strong support for AB 1362, proposed legislation that is currently moving through California’s legislature.
We had a lively discussion and heard some brilliant questions from the community—but the conversation doesn’t stop here! If you attended the event, what stood out most to you? Do you see AB 1362 making a positive impact? Let us know!
You can also take a deeper dive into the issue:

- Governor Newsom was Wrong to Veto a Bill to Protect 300,000 Migrant Workers
AB 1362 is a crucial step forward that, if passed and signed, would protect migrant workers and hold traffickers accountable in California.
We hope you’ll watch and share the conversation—and join us in supporting AB 1362.
“Forced labor is anti-competitive, it is anti-capitalist, people need to be free to decide where and who they want to work for. It’s good for business for you to have people who are not just working for you because you hold their passport.” — John Cotton Richmond
