Vocations for Inmates

Gov snips ribbonThe week starting Monday, 4 March, GIS Spotlight took you behind prison walls, promoted mentoring students, and got you thinking more about gender equality.

A frequent criticism about prisons is that they concentrate on a punitive approach but do little to rehabilitate offenders or prevent recidivism. The programme showed how government is working to change this view, as they took you inside Northward Prison to the recent launch of a new facility that trains inmates in positive career choices.

We saw the training on offer that helped to strike a balance between correcting deviant behaviour and rehabilitation in Cayman’s correctional service.

Wide shot of workshopAfter that, GIS Spotlight joined the Deputy Governor who is leading a new initiative in the civil service to mentor students and provide these impressionable young people with a wider insight into future career possibilities. We met the young man who was fortunate enough to have shadowed the head of the civil service. We heard about this programme spearheaded by the Chamber of Commerce, and learnt how other young Caymanians can benefit.

Finally, we were given still more information on how gender affects life in the Cayman Islands, that reinforce the need to establish equality. We learnt about the income gap as well as disparities in time usage between males and females and how these issues affect family life.

Produced by GIS Marketing and Communications, GIS Spotlight focuses on government services and solutions regarding issues that concern and affect you. The weekly programme airs Mondays on CIGTV on Cable Channel 20 after 7 pm; and on Cayman27 at 8.30 pm on Tuesdays, and 6 pm on Saturdays.

All stories seen in the week’s GIS Spotlight can also be found on the GIS Marketing and Communications website: www.gis.ky.
