UWI BOT Open Campus Manager visits Cayman Islands

AG-2Manager for the University of the West Indies British Overseas Territories Sites, Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks, is back on island after a one-week official visit to the Cayman Islands from 22-28 March 2015.

Dr. Fleming-Banks’ orientation visit was planned to coincide with the UWI Open Campus Cayman’s hosting of the distinguished Magna Carta and Human Rights lecture/seminar on 25 March. The Cayman Islands, which falls under the supervision of the Anguilla-based UWI Manager, was the only British Overseas Territory among the nine Commonwealth Countries in the region to host the distinguished lecture series.

Under the coordination of Dr. Hamid Ghany from the Faculty of Social Sciences, Constitutional Affairs & Parliamentary Studies Unit at the St Augustine Campus in Trinidad and Tobago and The Magna Carta 800th Anniversary Committee, the Magna Carta and Human Rights lectures sought to examine the relevance of the 800 year-old document which forms the essence of English common law and lies at the core of the democracies of most Commonwealth Caribbean countries today.

The Honourable Attorney General Mr. Samuel Bulgin delivered the Keynote Lecture at the Cayman event. His presentation, along with those of the other regional keynote presenters will be included in a book on the impact and influence of the Magna Carta on the Commonwealth Caribbean slated for publication later in the year.

While in the Cayman Islands, Dr. Fleming-Banks also paid courtesy calls on a number of officials/stakeholders, including Her Excellency The Governor, Mrs. Helen Kilpatrick, Minister of Education, Employment and Gender Affairs, the Honourable Tara Rivers, Permanent Secretary Education and the Chief Education Officer, as well as former Minister of Education and President of the University College of the Cayman Islands, Mr. Roy Bodden, President of the International College of the Cayman Islands, Dr. David Marshall and UWI Open Campus Cayman Students and Alumni.
