United States-based media house USA Today has published a top ten “Best Caribbean Island” list comprised of votes from 10Best.com website readers, who listed Tobago as the ninth best island in the Caribbean.

President of the Tobago Hotels, Restaurant and Tourism Association Nicholas Hardwicke said yesterday it is a great honour for Tobago to receive such an award.

Hardwicke said the award has come because of a collaborative effort among the Tobago House of Assembly, shareholders in the sector and work being carried out by contracted international representatives.

“And it comes at a very opportune time as well, because with Jet Blue commencing  services on the 24th of February out of New York,” he added.

Hardwicke told the Express there were still improvements to be made to ensure Tobago remains on top the tourism sector on the international market. He said marketing needed to be increased and delivery of goods and services to Tobago needed to be more efficient.

“I think we have to work on our capacity building because we spoke a long time about the need to add more room stock. We need to add more airlift,” he said.

Hardwicke’s restaurant at his Seahorse Inn was also recently voted one of the best Caribbean restaurants  for 2013, according to the website Caribjournal.com.
