Which states have the most gun owners? Our latest publication analyzes surveys and sales reports, revealing interesting trends in gun ownership across the United States.

Our findings were quite surprising. Here are a few quick reference points for you to review:

• American civilians own at least 46% of the world’s civilian-use firearms.
• Montana has the highest percentage of gun owners, with 66.3% of residents owning at least one gun.
• New Jersey and Massachusetts have the fewest number of gun owners, at only 14.7% of the population owning a firearm.

Note: State-level firearm ownership data may skew low due to restraints. All information regarding gun ownership is largely dependent on self-reporting, and states are less likely to publish gun ownership data than national databases.
