Ten tons of trash had to be removed from the shores of Virginia Beach on Monday after a Memorial Day event, WAVY 10 news reported.

The Chesapeake Bay beach commonly known as Chic’s Beach hosted an event on Sunday called Floatopia. Beachgoers celebrate Memorial Day weekend by bringing their own floats to the water.

Locals on Monday discovered beer cans, plastic bags, man-made rafts and other trash piled up on the shore.

Drew Lankford, with Virginia Beach Public Works, told the outlet 10 tons of trash were removed by cleaning crews, who started work around 4 a.m.

Longtime Virginia Beach resident Melissa Noel post a video on Facebook showing the debris.

City council member Michael Berlucchi criticized the mess left behind.

“We can do better than this! Let’s work together to keep our City beautiful,” he wrote.
