Exposed again: woman who was jailed at 16 for trying to smuggle cocaine from Caribbean

A Hucknall woman who was jailed as a teenager for trying to smuggle cocaine into the UK from the Caribbean has been exposed again as a drug dealer.

Laura Wynne, 30, of Goodall Crescent, pleaded guilty at Nottingham Crown Court to three charges of handling drugs in July last year.

Her barrister, Lisa Hardy, mitigating, revealed that, as a 16-year-old, Wynne was imprisoned for her part in an enterprise with two other girls aimed at bringing cocaine into this country.

“She was discharged from custody at the age of 19 and, since then, she has been dealing to fund her own habit,” said Mrs Hardy.

Wynne admits possession of cannabis, supplying amphetamine and possession of amphetamine with intent to supply.

“After coming out of prison, she got a good job at a hairdressing salon,” continued Mrs Hardy. “But she has effectively had a problem with amphetamine for several years.

“She has been clean for a few weeks now, but she is struggling and may need help from a drugs rehabilitation programme.”

The court heard that text messages on Wynne’s phone made it clear she had “a range of associates” which show there was a commercial element to her dealing.

Gareth Gimson, prosecuting, said: “We say the profit from her dealing is greater than simply funding her own habit. We are talking about 266 grams of amphetamine and a 37-gram bag of cannabis.”

Judge Stuart Rafferty agreed to adjourn the case for the preparation of a pre-sentence report on Wynne by probation officers. She is now expected to be sentenced on Friday, May 13.

Wynne was remanded on bail, on condition that she co-operates fully with the probation service.
