CARIBBEAN AND UK REBUILDING TIES

The UK’s Minister of State for Trade at the Department for International Trade, Baroness Rona Fairhead, has said that the Caribbean and the UK are rebuilding ties following the “headlights of Windrush”.

She told a reception of Caribbean and British business people that the Windrush generation had been “pioneers of migration” and added that recently- signed post-Brexit trade agreements would help to develop the partnership between the Caribbean and the UK.

HAITI ‘STANDS AT A CROSSROADS’

The UN’s Human Rights Chief Michelle Bachelet has called for strengthened “human rights protection” in Haiti as UN peacekeepers move into their final phase there. The UN Security Council debated Haiti with its peacekeeping operations scheduled to end in October. Ms Bachelet said that Haiti now stands “at the crossroads between peace-keeping and development”.

BARBADOS TO SLASH FOOD IMPORT

Bill Barbados is working on a programme to reduce its food import bill in the next year. Agriculture Minister Indar Weir told Forbes magazine that the island is aiming at a 25 to 30 per cent cut in the import of primary agricultural goods between 2019 and 2020, with an additional 10 per cent reduction each following year under the Farmers Empowerment and Enfranchisement Drive (FEED).

VIRGIN’S MAIDEN VOYAGE TO CUBA

Virgin Voyages has signed a deal to sail its first cruise ships into Cuba next year. One of its ships, Scarlet Lady, will be the biggest ship to sail into Havana Harbour. One itinerary includes ‘Havana After Dark’ themes, with visitors staying overnight and also visiting the Bahamas.
