The Editor Speaks: It is dumb to act dumb.

Why do governments play the dumb dumb game?

Are they frightened of lawsuits if they open up and tell us the truth?

It doesn’t matter to them that employees who are on full paid leaves of absence for months and sometimes years it’s us the public that pays for it.

It doesn’t happen in the private sector because the person who would place the employee on paid leave of absence is the boss. And HE pays for it.

The latest case is that of Department of Environmental Health (DEH) Director Roydell Carter. He is on paid leave since last November. He has not been suspended nor has he been placed on required leave.

So why is Carter on leave and on full pay that we are paying?

If you ask the DEH for more information you are told, “No updates at the time.” No updates? No updates to what?

The DEH have said zero.

Mark Rowland, Carter’s Deputy resigned, after implementing many improvements at the landfill. For the first time after a long time we actually saw some improvements.

Now he’s gone. No explanation. And since then it has been a catalogue of problems with garbage pickups or rather non-pickups. No scrapped cars allowed at the landfill site. Scrapped cars being dumped in the bushes along our roads.

We understand that morale is low at the DEH and the rumour surrounding Carter is that he was asked to resign but hasn’t. If he is on full pay for doing nothing why would he even contemplate resigning?

The silence about the situation and the continuing lack of any solution is really dumb.

The fact that no one is accountable for allowing this situation to continue is dumb.

Questions abound in how the private sector contracts were awarded. DEH are dumb to any answers.

The enormous amounts of overtime employees have to do.

And staff shortages when lots of Caymanians are crying out for a job.

Is that dumb?

Dumb and Dumber. That would make a good name for a movie.

What’s that? It’s been dumb?

PS Since writing this there was a fire at the George Town Landfill. – See “Closure of Cayman Islands George Town Landfill” at: http://www.ieyenews.com/wordpress/closure-of-cayman-islands-george-town-landfill/
