The Editor speaks: Hip Hop is NOT music

Colin Wilson

I love all genres of music except Hip Hop.

I loath Hip Hop.

I can find nothing that I like at all that is Hip Hop.

My favourite genre is Country followed by Easy Listening and Gospel.

I listen every day to music.

I cringe and get angry with the modern Country genre when it strays into hard rock and – oh no – traces of hip hop!

However……

I just read a commentary/opinion that we often publish by my friend, Paul McGowan. I say friend although we have never met. We have frequently corresponded because we both are audiophiles. In fact Paul owns one of the most successful and, in my opinion, the very best hi-fi equipment manufacturer in the world.

Paul is also a lover of music and today he wrote a commentary on “HIP HOP.

This what he said:

Hip Hop
December 18, 2018 by Paul McGowan

A few weeks ago we attended a hip hop concert by the Atlanta band Arrested Development. The venue was Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox, a crowded and intimate space located in a former brothel in downtown Denver. Terri and I did our best with ear protection but wound up struggling. I am on the hunt for even better means than the earplugs we thought would work. It was loud and moving.

I had ignorantly associated hip hop with gangster rap and didn’t really understand the genre this great band embraces. And, of course, each genre has so many offshoots that it’s usually a mistake to try and catalog it. As soon as you think it must be one thing, you hear a different strain and realize its roots have sprouted a massive many-branched tree that spreads its limbs wide. Just think of jazz and its many variations: Kenny G vs. Miles Davis.

What an absolutely delightful performance by one of the great bands of our time.

Get yourself some proper ear protection and mark your calendar.

If you still have a spark of rhythm and breath of beat in you, go see this band.

After reading it I realised my mistake. I too, was, relating hip hop to gangster RAP!

I’m sure there are a lot of people like me that like to make neat compartments in our minds and place things we believe fit into them. As one gets older the less compartments but they do get stuffed full just a dressing room drawer.

Not everything will fit so I will make a new one for hip hop and make sure gangster rap does not get placed into it.

Hip Hip. Hop Hop. Hooray – it is now music to my ears….
