Taylor Swift named in plane crash investigation as pilot ‘wrote her letters’ and listed her as next of kin

By Zaina Alibhai From metro.co .uk

A private pilot who died after crashing his plane in Nashville had written letters to Taylor Swift after developing an infatuation with the star.

Canadian Michael Callon had attempted to land his small aircraft in dense fog at Nashville Airport before the fatal accident in October 2013.

The 45-year-old was over the legal alcohol limit and the sole passenger in the Cessna 172R plane, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) records obtained by WSMV-TV reveal.

The report detailed a mental health evaluation Michael underwent in 2012, where he admitted to sending a number of letters to Taylor.

The medical examiner had described the notes to ‘have the flavour of stalking’. Michael also had a history of repeated convictions, with his parole officer saying he had developed a significant interest in a Nashville-based celebrity.

Michael had rented a plane from Windsor Flying Club and reported his destination as Ontario, Canada.

He instead flew to Nashville, Taylor’s hometown.

Reports reveal Michael had circled the airport for two hours before the crash, and the airplane to burst into flames upon impact.

At the time of the incident, a FAA investigator told police the pilot had listed the singer as his next of kin – a claim Windsor Flying Club denied.

However, Michael’s membership form to the club showed he did indeed cite Taylor as his emergency contact.
