| Hurricane Melissa is now making landfall in southwestern Jamaica, packing maximum sustained winds of 185 miles per hour. This monster system is forecasted to make history as the strongest hurricane on record to strike Jamaica. All persons in Melissa’s direct path were advised to seek the most secure shelter possible before the full brunt of the storm hits, if it was still safe to do so. Melissa will no doubt cause catastrophic damages to national and personal assets in the affected areas. We, therefore, join the Caribbean community and our brothers and sisters in Jamaica in mapping the road to recovery as quickly as possible in Melissa’s aftermath. Last October, during the Caribbean Week of Agriculture, the host Minister, Hon. Saboto S. Caesar, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries, Rural Transformation, Industry & Labour, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, highlighted the need for better post-disaster support for countries. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines was among the Caribbean countries devastated by Hurricane Beryl, which made history as the earliest category 4 hurricane to hit the Caribbean in July 2024. Grenada also suffered major impacts from Beryl. Following the intervention by Minister Caesar, the CRFM Ministerial Council “called on the CRFM to establish a structured mechanism to provide post-disaster support to Member States, including but not limited to communication and information exchange.” In keeping with this mandate, the CRFM began to develop a climate resilience portal, on which it has published an information-rich pagededicated to hurricane resilience. This series of information alerts is also in keeping with the Council’s directive to support post-disaster recovery across CRFM Member States. We appeal to the entire CRFM Community to contribute towards Jamaica’s full and speedy recovery. One way of doing so is donating directly through the official Support Jamaica portal. |
