  • Chappell, 51, faces charges for refusing to give info to the pensions watchdog
  • When lawyers said Green should hand over documents they asked where he is
  • The 51-year-old’s defence team said he was ‘probably in a yacht in the Caribbean’

The billionaire former owner of BHS Sir Philip Green is ‘probably on his yacht in the Caribbean’ while the man he sold it to is in court facing charges over its collapse, a court heard today.

Dominic Chappell, 51, a former bankrupt with no retail experience, bought the high street chain from Green for just £1 back in 2015.

But in April 2016 the company went bust, with the loss of 11,000 jobs nationwide and a black hole of pensions worth £571million.

In court his lawyers claim Sir Philip Green, 65, should be the one getting a grilling.

But when they were quizzed on his whereabouts they said the fashion mogul is ‘probably on his yacht in the Caribbean’.

The Pensions Regulator has special powers to request confidential information about the company collapse under Section 72 of the Pensions Act.

But it claims Chappell has refused to hand over the documents on three occasions, which has resulted in criminal charges.

The BHS boss denies three counts of failing to hand over information.
