Second Sitting of First Meeting of Parliament Today May 7

The Second Sitting of the First Meeting of Parliament following the General Election will take place at the House of Parliament today, Wednesday, 7 May, commencing 2:00 pm.

Newly elected Speaker of the House, Honourable Ezzard Miller, who was sworn in yesterday at the First Sitting (6 May), will continue with his duties with the calling of nominations for the election of members to the Standing Public Accounts Committee.

Other activities to take place include the appointment of a Standing House Committee and nomination for election of its members, appointment of the Standing Privileges Committee, appointment of the Standing Select Committee to oversee the performance of the Office of the Ombudsman and nomination for election of its members

In addition to the election of the Speaker of the House of Parliament, nineteen Members of Parliament were sworn in. Member of Parliament (MP) for West Bay South, Honourable Andre Ebanks was elected as Premier of the Cayman Islands, MP for George Town North, Honourable Joseph Hew was presented with the Instrument of Appointment as Leader of the Opposition, MP for George Town Central, Kenneth Bryan was presented with the Instrument of Appointment as Deputy Leader of the Opposition and MP for George Town West Honourable Pearlina McGaw-Lumsden, was elected as Deputy Speaker.

Parliamentary proceedings can be accessed live on the Cayman Islands Government’s YouTube channel, CIGTV and Radio Cayman. Members of the public may also view from the public gallery at the House of Parliament after signing-in with security.
