Report: Cayman Islands is owed $20M in uncollected debt

cimoneyGEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands – The government of the Cayman Islands claims more than $20 million in uncollected debt, the majority for overseas medical expenses.

Public documents show the British territory is owed more than $15 million for medical procedures paid to those who could not receive required treatment on the island.

The government also has $2 million in unpaid garbage fees and $1.6 million in unpaid travel taxes.

The information is based on statistics from December and was released this week as part of a freedom of information request filed by a local resident.

The island approved its freedom of information act in 2007, and it became applicable in 2009.
