ANNAPOLIS, Maryland – Quinnipiac women’s golf freshman Luciana Tobia (La Paz, Bolivia) completed an impressive collegiate debut with the second-best 54-hole score in program history at Navy’s Chesapeake Bay Invitational at the US Naval Academy Golf Course in Annapolis, Maryland.

As a team, Quinnipiac finished eighth with a combined 963, which fell a stroke behind Hofstra (962) for seventh place. Penn won the tournament with five players in the top 20 to produce a 925. Towson (930), Longwood (930), Dartmouth (937), Wagner (951) and Navy (958) finished ahead of Hofstra and Quinnipiac while Sacred Heart (966), Delaware State (1,007) and The Citadel (1,012) rounded out the 11-team field.

On Saturday, Sept. 19 Tobia finished tied for seventh out of 64 golfers after shooting a 75 for the first round to go with a 78 for the second round for a combined 153. She followed with a 79 on the final round on Sunday to wrap-up the tournament with a 231 – two strokes off the program record set for a 54-hole tournament set by Nicole Scola (Westerly, Rhode Island) at the 2013 Yale Women’s Fall Invitational.

“I’m so impressed with how Luciana [Tobia] carries herself on the golf course,” head coach John O’Connor said. “She’s a tenacious competitor, and produced three rounds in the 70’s for the tournament. I look forward to a lot of good rounds from her.”

Caitlan Blydenburgh (Castleton, New York) finished tied for 25th after following her first-day totals of 78 and 79 with an 82 over the final 18 holes of the tournament to finish with a 239.

“Caitlan Blydenburgh continues to be a very pleasant surprise,” O’Connor said. “The story of the day is Julia Kemmling. Julia shot a team-best 77 and did an absolute wonderful job today. Her long game was very good and she had very few putts. All-in-all I think the freshmen that we added this year are going to make a huge difference in our program.”

Julia Kemmling (Berlin, Connecticut) showed the biggest improvement of all six Quinnipiac golfers on Sunday. Kemmling trimmed seven strokes off her previous round to shoot a team-best 77, which was also Quinnipiac’s second-best 18-hole score of the tournament. Kemmling started the day tied for 41st place after shooting an 82 and 84 on the first two rounds on Saturday, but finished with a 243 over 54 holes for a tie of 34th place.

Emily Ribbins (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) improved on her previous round, shooting an 82 on Sunday – six strokes better than her second round on Saturday. She finished tied for 46th at 254. Abby Chase (Beaver Dam, Wisconsin) finished tied for 53rd while Taylor Lambrou (Baldwin, New York) was just behind her in 55th place.

Quinnipiac returns to action Sept. 26-27 when it competes in the Dartmouth Invitational at the Hanover Country Club in Hanover, New Hampshire.
