A cohort of experienced Parliamentarians and Clerks will address Members of the Parliament of the Cayman Islands at a virtual Post-Election Seminar hosted by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) this week.

New and returning MPs, elected at the 2021 General Election held on 14 April, will benefit from the insights of experienced parliamentary stakeholders. Convened by the CPA, the Seminar will feature Members of eleven Commonwealth Parliaments – including Antigua and Barbuda, Maldives, Ontario, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Kingdom and the States of Jersey.

The virtual seminar will begin with an opening ceremony held online on 4 August 2021, where the Premier of the Cayman Islands, Hon. G. Wayne Panton JP MP, and the Speaker of the Parliament, Hon. Dr W. McKeeva Bush OBE JP MP, will deliver opening remarks alongside the CPA Secretary-General, Stephen Twigg. The main programme will follow, consisting of a series of virtual workshops held across the remainder of the week.

Each session will focus on the role of a Member of Parliament, providing participants with insight on a variety of topics, from the importance of effectively communicating with constituents to the value of scrutinising legislation. This seminar will provide Members with an opportunity to develop and hone the necessary skills required to be a Member of Parliament in the Cayman Islands.

The CPA Secretary-General said: “The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association is delighted to support the Parliament of the Cayman Islands once again through the delivery of the third successive Post-Election Seminar programme, following previous seminars in 2013 and 2017. This virtual seminar will provide the opportunity for the 21 Members of Parliament in the Cayman Islands to come together to consider how democracy on the islands can be further strengthened and to learn from the experiences of their parliamentary colleagues elsewhere in the Commonwealth.”

The CPA connects, develops, promotes and supports Parliamentarians and parliamentary staff to identify benchmarks of good governance and the implementation of the enduring values of the Commonwealth. It brings Commonwealth Parliamentarians and parliamentary staff together to exchange ideas among themselves and with experts in various fields and to identify new policy options they can adopt or adapt in the governance of their societies.
