OIC launched the “Support a Second Team” campaign in Kirkwall today

Orkney Islands Council launched its local Glasgow 2014 ‘Support a Second Team’ campaign today, Friday.

Each local authority area in Scotland has been twinned with at least two other Commonwealth countries, which local people will be urged to support as their ‘second team’ at the Commonwealth Games in July. Orkney has been twinned with Tanzania and the Cayman Islands.

A series of events has been planned by the council including Commonwealth food days in schools and the Kirkwall Community Centre, and dance workshops.  The schools have also been provided with education packs and there will be a wealth of information about the two countries available on the OIC website.

Garry Burton, OIC sports and leisure service manager, said: “The Glasgow games will make 2014 a special year and there will be opportunities for everyone to be part of it.

“Orkney is absolutely delighted to be working with Tanzania and the Cayman Islands on the Support 2nd Team initiative. We already have a good sporting relationship with the Cayman Islands through the Island Games and look forward to forging a relationship with Tanzania too.

“By working together on Support 2nd Team it provides opportunities for our young people to work together and cement relationships for the future, thus developing our legacy for future years.”

Kids from Peedie Breeks Nursery were on hand to help with the launch of the campaign.
