More mangroves to be destroyed

By Georgina Wilcox

RC Estates have been given permission to remove 50 feet of recovering mangrove buffer that runs 2,000ft along the coastal lots of a proposed development in the South Sound.

In today’s Editorial “When will they ever learn?” Colin Wilson calls the decision by the Cayman Islands Planning Authority (CPA) as “extraordinary”. He was being mild. Some people would have called it “insane”.

We publish below the entire report from National Coastal Protection called “Reduction of Wind and Swell Waves by Mangroves”. We encourage you to read it and then go to Wilson’s Editorial.

We hope you will spurred on to do something positive as this decision will affect all of us living here in the Cayman Islands. There can only be one reason why the developer RC Estates wants to do this and it has nothing to do with preserving the quality of life and safety of anyone of us living here.

We are happy to report we are not the only media outlet against this decision by the CPA.

At the end of the Editorial is listed the members of the CPA and the ones who were present and made this damaging decision. We believe you should know who these people are. Tell them personally what you think.
